Lisa Mankins is returning to coach the Greensburg Salem girls basketball team, and it looks it could be a family affair on the bench.
Her daughters, former Greensburg Salem basketball players Abby and Kaitlyn Mankins, may join the staff as assistants.
The sisters played together last season at Seton Hill. Abby finished her college career, whereas Kaitlyn is a sophomore this year.
Lisa Mankins was approved Wednesday night. One or both of her daughters could be up for vote this summer.
“That’s the plan,” Greensburg Salem athletic director Drake D’Angelo said after Wednesday’s board meeting.
Lisa Mankins replaces Rick Klimchock, who coached the team since 2017. She was the Golden Lions’ coach for three years before she joined her husband Craig’s staff on the boys team.
She later coached with Klimchock for five years, and the pair also coached the middle school team together.
Greensburg Salem also hired Jeff Nese as boys soccer coach.
Nese guided the Plum boys to a WPIAL championship in 2005.
He also coached the boys and girls teams at Penn-Trafford.
Nese replaces Rich Christeleit, who was not rehired.
Speaking of family connections, Nese’s brother, Rick, is another former Penn-Trafford head coach. He is currently an assistant with the Plum boys.
Like the Mankins name to Greensburg Salem basketball, Nese is synonymous with WPIAL soccer.
Lisa Mankins and Nese are teachers at Greensburg Salem Middle School, which was a bonus to their hiring.
Both applied on their own volition, so it wasn’t a case of the district recruiting them to the sidelines.
“Ultimately, they have a vested interest in our school district and they know our kids,” D’Angelo said. “They are about GS and bring great experience to the table. They are true-blue Greensburg Salem type of people.”
