The top of Section 2 in Class A WPIAL softball will either fall in order at 1-2-3, or we could be a step closer to tri-champions in the section.
The highlight of the district softball Friday schedule is a battle of Greene County powers as Carmichaels hosts Jefferson-Morgan.
The Mighty Mikes are in first place with a 7-1 record in the section and a 10-3 overall mark.
They can clinch at least a share of the section title with West Greene if they win. The Pioneers are finished with their section schedule at 8-2.
If Carmichaels defeats Jefferson-Morgan and Avella (0-8) on Monday, the Mighty Mikes will clinch the outright section crown and likely earn one of the top two seeds in the upcoming Class A playoffs.
However, the Rockets have one win over the Mikes this season and a sweep guarantees them a share of the section championship.
Jefferson-Morgan concludes section play Friday and enters the showdown with a 7-2 section record, 10-3 overall.
On Monday, the Rockets lost to West Greene, then bounced back to shut out California on Wednesday.
The Mighty Mikes have won five straight since losing in eight innings at Jefferson-Morgan, 2-1.
Other key Friday frays
There are several other district softball games Friday, some with playoff implications.
• Hempfield (11-0) can clinch at least a share of the 6A regular season title with a victory at home over Canon-McMillan (5-7).
The Big Macs are currently in a tie for fourth place in 6A with Pine-Richland (5-7), with both teams only one game ahead of North Allegheny (4-8) and two games up on Mt. Lebanon (3-9).
Pine-Richland visits Seneca Valley (9-2), North Allegheny hosts Norwin (8-2) and Mt. Lebanon is home to Butler (1-11).
The top six teams qualify for the playoffs in 6A with Hempfield, Seneca Valley and Norwin having already clinched.
• Two teams fighting for second place in Section 1-5A behind Shaler wrap up their section schedule Friday when Plum (8-3) visits North Hills (6-5) and Fox Chapel (7-4) is on the road at Mars (2-9).
• Speaking of second place, that is what’s at stake in Section 2-4A when West Mifflin (7-4) travels to battle Laurel Highlands (7-4).
Both teams have clinched but the loser falls into a tie with Uniontown for third place.
• The top two teams in Section 3-4A are in action Friday.
First-place Blackhawk (7-1) is home to Beaver (5-3), which is currently tied for third place with Hampton (8-3).
Second-place North Catholic (7-2) is also on the road at Central Valley (3-7).
• Serra Catholic (6-0) can clinch the Section 3-A title outright with a win at The Ellis School (0-4).
Nonsection baseball
There are plenty of nonsection baseball games slated for Friday.
• Two highly ranked schools collide when Class 4A top-ranked Indiana (10-2) visits Class A No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (9-0) at 4 p.m.
• Eden Christian Academy (10-3) is hosting Freedom (5-7) in a battle of 2025 PIAA runners-up in Class A and Class 2A respectively.
