A Sewickley Township father of five has been appointed to the Yough School Board, filling a vacancy and bringing a focus on diverse learning paths for district students.

Gary Wetzler, 43, was selected Tuesday during a public special meeting to replace Gregg Nogy, who resigned April 1 after serving multiple terms. Wetzler, who has not previously served on the board, was hired in a 5-3 vote.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to bring my ideas and work with the current board to ‘learn the ropes,’” Wetzler said. “I’m a firm believer that not every student’s path is the same and not every student learns the same way. We need opportunities for all students to succeed.”

Wetzler’s connection to the district is personal; he and his wife have five children enrolled across three levels of Yough schools. While this is his first time in public office, he said he has frequently been involved in community organizations, charitable work and “behind the scenes” projects.

“I’m always looking for opportunities to help out where I can,” he said.

Wetzler was one of five candidates who submitted letters of interest for the position. Board President Linda Knor said three of those candidates were nominated during the meeting.

“The candidates we had, I would have been satisfied with any of them,” Knor said. “They were all very qualified.”

Wetzler will serve the remainder of Nogy’s term, which expires in December 2027. He confirmed he plans to run for a full term in the 2027 local election to continue his service.

Nogy, whose reason for resignation was not disclosed by the board, previously served on the technology, buildings and grounds, and student activities committees, and chaired the transportation committee, according to the school board’s website.
