Saint Vincent men’s volleyball snagged three major postseason awards in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

One went to sophomore libero Jackson Genicola, a Norwin graduate who was named defensive player of the year.

Genicola, who moved from setter to libero this season, averaged 3.44 digs per set, the top average in the PAC and the sixth-best mark in Division III. He had 210 digs in 19 games, including a conference-high 24 against Grove City.

Freshman Jack Ryan was tabbed newcomer of the year, and the Bearcats’ Kate McCauley was awarded as coach of the year.

Right on track

The Norwin boys track & field team finished second at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Championships at West Mifflin.

The girls team took third at the event as senior Annie Czajkowski won the 1,600-meter run.

Top mark

Norwin junior Gabrielle Watson has the No. 1 distance in the WPIAL in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 1 inch.

Double trouble

A pair of Norwin boys tennis doubles teams went 1-1 at the WPIAL Section 1-3A tournament.

The No. 9 seeded team of Mike Barone and Nick Patter advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-5 victory over Avery Shaffer and Lochlan Wallace of Plum.

They fell in the quarters to eventual section champions Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memijie.

Danny Metzger and Jaxson Momeyer won their preliminary round match, 10-1, over Zander Cobb and Miguel Lazaro of Plum before falling in the first round.

Martin up for award

Norwin wrestling coach Kyle Martin is a finalist for the Cane’s WPIAL Coach of the Year.

The other two finalists are Bethel Park softball coach Nicole Davis and Chris Goyke, the middle school soccer coach at East Allegheny.

Martin guided the Knights to a WPIAL 3A runner-up finish this season. The Knights’ Landon Sidun was a PIAA champion at 121 pounds.
