Saturday in the Steel City proved to be one of those sports days rabid fans only get to enjoy every so often.

With the city finishing off the three-day spectacle that is the NFL Draft and the Penguins trying to keep their Stanley Cup playoff hopes alive in Philadelphia, the local 11 of the Riverhounds welcomed USL League One opponent Greenville Triumph out of South Carolina to open USL Cup play.

In addition to all that, the club announced a new strategic partnership with F.N.B. Bank on Wednesday, as the naming rights to the current and future stadium the club will call home changed hands.

It didn’t take long for the Riverhounds to establish momentum as a goal in the seventh minute propelled the club to a convincing 3-0 win and gave the team a perfect 5-0 start at home this season in all competitions.

Coach Rob Vincent took the opportunity to rest some key players, including leading goal scorer Albert Dikwa, giving forward Trevor Amann his first start of 2026, and the move paid off with his first goal of the season. It came off a nice cross from Robbie Mertz, who fed a ball deep into the 6-yard box where Amann used his chest to get the ball behind Triumph keeper Seth Torman for a 1-0 lead.

“Really happy for him. He was in the right spot.” Vincent said. “It’s what we ask of our guys at the top. Always make sure you’re in the box. Try to be in the right areas. He worked hard, contributed to the press. I’m happy he was able to get on the score sheet.”

The Riverhounds didn’t stop there, as in the 42nd minute it was Mertz again forcing the action inside the Triumph attacking box, unleashing a shot at point-blank range on keeper Seth Torman, who made a great save. Unfortunately for him, the rebound found midfielder Max Viera, who had an easy tap-in and a 2-0 Hounds lead they took into halftime.

Pittsburgh wasn’t done with the scoring, nor was Amann, who in the 62nd minute took a long ball from Jackson Walti and buried a header past a diving Torman for his second goal of the night and a 3-0 lead.

“I feel like I should have had three,” Amann joked afterwards. “It’s always nice to score. It’s important to start this competition on the way, both for myself and the team. Three goals and a clean sheet. What more can you ask for?”

The Riverhounds scored a fourth goal six minutes later by Amann, but he was ruled offside, and that was the last real threat of the night by either team. As expected, it was a statistically one-sided affair with the host holding an 11-1 shot advantage and 7-1 edge in shots on goal.

Much was made about the coaching change the Riverhounds made last October when Bob Lilley was placed on administrative leave and eventually fully replaced by Vincent. What’s clear at this point is he has led this club to a 9-0-1 mark in his first 10 matches at home since taking over.

“We’ve tried to be really deliberate about how we play here.” Vincent said. “When you play in this league, every road trip is a little bit different. Here we know what our strengths are. It’s a small field. We can press and get about teams. The guys show up and play with intensity, making it really difficult on teams coming here.”

The club will have six days to prepare for its next USL Championship match, a home game against Western Conference foe Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, May 2. The contest will start just after 7 p.m. and will be televised on SportsNet Pittsburgh.
