#Earned – Bailey Barnyak and her Carmichaels teammates have accomplished a lot over the last three years.

They reached the WPIAL Class A championship game in 2023, the PIAA state final in 2024 and the district title game again in 2025.

But after going through enough “silver” linings, Barnyak is hoping her senior year is a golden experience.

The first step was achieved this past week when Carmichaels clinched a share of the Section 2-A championship.

The Mighty Mikes can win the crown outright with a victory over Avella on Monday.

Last week began for Carmichaels with a nonsection contest against a Charleroi team that has clinched a Class 3A playoff berth.

In five innings of work, Barnyak allowed no runs on one hit with a walk and 10 strikeouts as the Mighty Mikes blanked the Cougars, 10-0.

The next day was a return to section play with a trip to Beth-Center against the fourth-place and playoff-bound Bulldogs.

In another five-inning game, Barnyak threw a no-hitter with two walks and 11 strikeouts as Carmichaels cruised to the 11-0 victory.

Friday was a key game in the battle for the Section 2-A title. A Carmichaels win would put the Mikes in the driver’s seat for first place, however a Jefferson-Morgan road win would force a three-way tie for the top spot between the Mighty Mikes, the Rockets and West Greene.

After falling behind in the third inning, Carmichaels tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, then scored twice in the sixth inning to secure the 3-1 victory.

In seven innings, Barnyak yielded an unearned run on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

She is 11-3 this season with a 0.43 ERA. Barnyak has pitched 81 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs, 30 hits with only 16 walks and 143 strikeouts to place among the top five in the WPIAL in strikeouts.

She is hardly one-dimensional as a player, leading the team with a .487 batting average. Barnyak has one home run and 13 RBIs. She has a .592 on-base percentage, .667 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.259.

Bailey plans to continue her career this fall at IUP.
