Jonas King keeps climbing.
He flew under the college football recruiting radar slightly coming out of Mt. Pleasant but found his way onto the field at the NCAA Division II level.
While he was at Mercyhurst, the school made the jump from NCAA Division II to Division I. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive end kept making plays.
Now, he is making inroads to the NFL.
King received a post-NFL Draft invite to rookie camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.
King showed flashes of athleticism at Mt. Pleasant.
Known for his physical, old-school approach, King began his college career as an outside linebacker before switching to defense end.
Disruptive off the edge, he performed well at Mercyhurst’s pro day last month.
This season, as a grad student, he played in all 12 games and made 30 tackles – 15 solo, 15 assisted – with 8.5 going for loss. His 1.5 sacks ranked second on the Lakers (5-7, 4-3 NEC).
In 32 career games, he had 53 tackles, 12 for loss, and 2.5 sacks. As a senior, he defended a pass and scored a two-point conversion.
King had ACL reconstruction late in his sophomore season and was slowed some during his junior season before regaining his footing and catching the eye of pro scouts.
Rookie camps are three days long and feature drafted players and undrafted free agents in non-contact workouts, with orientation.
Participants will look to land on a team’s 90-man offseason roster.
