The fields in North Huntingdon’s parks could take on the look of minor league ballparks with banners advertising sponsors’ services.
The township is launching a program giving businesses the opportunity to advertise on ballfield fences and other athletic fields, said Lydia Kinkaid, the township’s parks and recreation program coordinator. The sponsorship program is a way of bringing additional revenue to the parks fund, Kinkaid said.
“It’s pretty common. There are a lot of parks and recreation programs that have them,” Kinkaid said.
North Huntingdon already has a sponsorship program with area businesses for various programs and events, Kinkaid said.
For the sports banner program, the township envisions having a 4-by-6-foot self-designed banner placed on a field fence for $400 for a 12-month period, Kinkaid said. The fee covers the cost of printing, Kinkaid said.
“We’re still working on the program that the commissioners had passed,” Kinkaid said.
If a banner is damaged by weather, it would be reprinted for the business if the damage occurs during the calendar year. There is an $85 fee for reprinting a banner if it is not in good condition.
The township is creating the banner program for businesses to tout their services at Penn’s Woods, Hilltop, Oak Hollow, Tinker’s Run and Westmoreland City parks. Kinkaid said there is space for numerous banners at the fields.
Kinkaid told the township commissioners the Norwin Lacrosse Club, which rents the athletic field at Oak Hollow Park, wants to have banners at the field to offset the rental costs of that field and indoor fields in the offseason.
Vicki Potter, president of the Norwin Lacrosse Club, could not be reached for comment.
The banners can be a way of dealing with the availability of fields and the rising costs of rental fees, said Amy Johnson, a former president of the lacrosse club.
“Sadly, the costs are passed onto the parents of the players. I’d love to see a banner or advertisements of those businesses as I would be inclined to in turn support those businesses,” Johnson said.
