A Sewickley Township man was arrested Monday after state police said he swam across the Youghiogheny River to evade capture, according to court papers.

Robert F. Mayfield Jr., 68, was being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $5,000 bail on charges of resisting arrest, terroristic threats, criminal mischief and related offenses.

Troopers said they were called to Sutersville around 4 p.m. after Mayfield was seen on a First Street property. Damage to a boat tire was discovered, police said. Troopers reported finding Mayfield over an embankment hiding behind a tree along the Youghiogheny River on the Sutersville side.

When police told him to come out, Mayfield swam across the river and hid in the tree line, according to court papers. The state police aviation unit and local fire departments helped as he was taken into custody.

Mayfield told police he damaged the tire because he was angry, according to court papers. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A May 11 preliminary hearing is set.
