It’s National Superhero Day, just in case you’re not yet tired of the constant avalanche of comic-book properties cascading down the mountain of American entertainment.
Even as many superhero movies — looking at you, Marvel — have begun to get a bit formulaic in their approach, it’s important to remember that comic books may have been among the first places where children saw a hero who looked like them. They spoke to the political issues of the day during the civil-rights era and beyond.
That said, it doesn’t mean we can’t poke a little fun at them.
‘Badman’
Comedian Pete Holmes’ series “Badman” turns a satirical lens on the practical aspects of being a superhero. This episode spoofs Batman’s habit of suddenly disappearing mid-conversation.
‘Superfriends: Wassup?’
Those of us of a certain age will recall (Fondly? Debatable.) the Bud Light “Wassup?” ad campaign, featuring a group of friends greeting one another with increasingly-insane versions of the tag line.
As early internet joke culture began making its way across the Web, this video began making the rounds a year or so after the commercial that inspired its audio.
‘Redneck Avengers’
The “Bad Lip Reading” series has always done a top-notch job of sending up popular movies and TV shows, even if some of overdubs make absolutely no sense. Here, they turn the first “Avengers” film into some sort of weird hillbilly soap opera.
‘Spider-Grinch’
What if the Grinch was Spider-Man? There is no sugar-coating just how dumb this idea is. And yet somehow, that doesn’t make this parody trailer any less funny.
‘Dad Joke(r)’
This might be the perfect satire piece. It combines a goofy premise with a faithful recreation of the “Joker” re-boot trailer, dropping other “Dad” references along the way and walking the line between dumb-funny and genuinely creepy.
’90s Avengers’
This is just an AI video recasting the Marvel movies as though they’d been made in the 1990s. You have to admit, the idea of peak Jim Carrey as Loki is pretty intriguing. And of course, Blade is still Wesley Snipes!
‘Avengers: 1980s Sitcom’
This last one is the same basic concept using AI, but recast as a 1980s sit-com starring Hawkeye as the paper delivery boy and Thanos as the president of the local homeowners’ association.
