There are only a few WPIAL softball playoff spots up for grabs heading into the final week of the regular season.

One team still alive in Section 1-4A must win Wednesday and get some help Friday.

First and foremost, Freeport has to take care of business when it visits Greensburg Salem at 4:15 p.m.

The Yellowjackets are currently outside the playoff bubble in fifth place with a 4-7 section record heading into their section finale.

The Golden Lions are currently in fourth place with a 5-5 section record and have already clinched a playoff berth.

Freeport needs a road win Wednesday and to have Greensburg Salem lose at Derry (8-3) on Friday.

The Jackets are 7-9 for the season and have lost three of their last four games while the Lions are 5-6 overall and have also dropped three of four games recently.

Two weeks ago in the first meeting between the two at Freeport, Greensburg Salem won, 7-5.

Baseball clinching at stake

Chartiers-Houston (5-4) currently sits in third place in Section 1-2A baseball behind Fort Cherry and California.

While those other two teams have qualified for the district postseason, the Buccaneers can join them with a home win Wednesday against Frazier (2-7) at EQT Park in Washington at 7 p.m.

The Commodores are coming off a series sweep by Burgettstown on Monday and Tuesday and are in must-win mode in order to catch the Bucs.

2A team tennis postponed

Due to the wet weather forecast for Wednesday, the WPIAL has decided to postpone the schedule WPIAL boys team tennis Class 2A quarterfinals a day.

The four scheduled matches will now take place Thursday.
