Shaler Area Middle School was briefly evacuated Wednesday morning when an automated fire alarm went off, a district spokeswoman said.
The alarm at the school on Mt. Royal Boulevard went off about 8:44 a.m., spokeswoman Carrie Butler said.
A high water sensor, along with dust from work being done on the roof, triggered the alarm, she said.
By 8:50 a.m., firefighters arrived and after an initial exterior and interior sweep cleared the building for students and staff to go inside the gymnasium.
Shaler police Chief Sean Frank also confirmed there was no fire.
”There was one staff member that thought there was an odor of smoke, but no source was found,” he said.
By 9:30 a.m., the building was cleared to return to standard operations, Butler said.
“Families have been advised, and all students and staff are safe and accounted for,” Butler said. “The safety and well-being of our school community remain our highest priorities, and our established emergency protocols were followed precisely and efficiently.”
