A teenage girl has been charged with repeatedly stabbing another juvenile in front of the Pittsburgh police Downtown Public Safety Center late Thursday.
It was one of three stabbings, including one that was fatal, that occurred across the city in a two-day period.
Surveillance video footage showed De’Love Henderson, 15, of Pittsburgh’s North Side attack the juvenile outside the Wood Street substation around 11:55 p.m., according to a criminal complaint.
Henderson rushed toward the victim outside the Downtown Pittsburgh police substation, “swinging the knife aggressively and in an overhead manner,” the complaint said.
The victim, who police did not name or identify by gender, was pinned against the public safety center’s front door during the attack, the complaint said. Police said Henderson slashed the victim multiple times as the victim tried to shield their face.
Police said Henderson then ran down Wood Street.
Deep cut
After the attack, the victim banged on the public safety center’s front door “frantically — with blood dripping down her arms,” the complaint said.
The public safety center’s front door is typically locked.
Responding officers applied a tourniquet to slow the bleeding from a deep cut on the victim’s right arm.
“This laceration was so deep, officers could observe tendons,” the complaint said.
The victim’s left arm was also stabbed, the complaint said. Paramedics took them to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Police charged Henderson with aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, and one count each of recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct.
After the attack, officers broadcast a description of Henderson over police radio, including a distinctive tie-dyed sweatshirt they said she wore.
Henderson was picked up Friday while trying to board a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus Downtown near Sixth Avenue, the complaint said. It was not clear whether she was wearing the sweatshirt.
Police did not say what time she was arrested.
When an officer approached Henderson, she spontaneously said, “I don’t even have a knife,” according to the complaint.
Henderson was charged as an adult. Police took her to the Allegheny County Jail, where she was arraigned, court records show.
A judge denied bail, citing public safety.
Surveillance footage from earlier on the night of the attack showed the victim dancing in front of the police station, the complaint said. At one point, the victim talked with Henderson “but nothing physical happened.”
Police said Henderson walked away toward Fifth Avenue but returned shortly before midnight carrying “a large kitchen knife.”
Other stabbings
Police were dispatched last week to two other stabbings — one in the city’s Sheraden neighborhood and one in Glen Hazel.
In Sheraden, a woman was stabbed multiple times Thursday on Stadium Street around 10 p.m and was found by police in the 3100 block of Ashlynn Street.
The woman, who police did not name, was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.
In the third incident in two days, a Glen Hazel man died after being stabbed in his neighborhood around 10:30 a.m. Friday, Pittsburgh police said.
Officers had been dispatched that morning to the 900 block of Roselle Court for a domestic altercation.
The man — later identified as Alex Colvin Jr., 38 — had been stabbed in the upper left side of his chest, police said.
He was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where he died in the emergency room.
Police have made no arrests in the Sheraden or Glen Hazel incidents.
