Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Thursday, April 30:
Investigation finds Allentown fire was intentionally set
Officials investigating an April 19 fire in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood say it was intentionally set.
The city’s Fire Investigation Unit is working to determine the cause of the fire, reported just after 5 a.m. on the 1500 block of Arlington Avenue.
In all, 13 people were displaced from two buildings damaged by the flames.
No injuries were reported.
IRS places lien on former Steeler’s property
The IRS has placed a lien on Pittsburgh property owned by former Steeler Plaxico Burress.
According to a notice filed April 1 in Allegheny County by IRS officials in Detroit, Burress owes nearly $400,000 in back taxes for property he owns on the city’s Herr Island off the 30th Street Bridge.
Tax records indicate Burress — who played in Pittsburgh from 2000-04 and again from 2012-13 — owes back taxes from 2019, 2021, 2024 and 2025 for property on Overlook Court.
Burress has had tax trouble in the past, indicted in New Jersey in 2015 for failure to pay nearly $48,000 in income taxes. He entered into a plea agreement and was ordered to repay $56,000 in back taxes, penalties and restitution.
Albert Gallatin to cut teachers and staff
The Albert Gallatin School District will cut more than 24 teachers, support staff and administrative positions for the 2026-27 school year.
The Fayette County district’s school board voted to eliminate between 24 and 30 positions in response to declining enrollment and budgetary concerns, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.
“You can only save money so many ways, and unfortunately, it’s coming down to an economic furlough as well as for declining enrollment,” Superintendent Christopher Pegg told WTAE. “Because our preliminary budget, we were $6.3 million deficit, short. After this fiscal year, we would only have $5.1 million in our fund balance, and it’s dangerous to keep using fund balance.”
Pegg said the moves will save the district an estimated $3 million and achieve a balanced budget.
