Junior Sean Cartwright continued his breakthrough season with a record-breaking performance at the 103rd Westmoreland County Coaches Association track and field championships at Mt. Pleasant.
Cartwright won three events — the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump, and ran a leg of the first-place 400-meter relay.
His time of 14.09 seconds was a new meet record, while he leapt 6 feet, 7 inches to win the high jump.
“What a great day,” Cartwright said. “I just missed clearing 6-9, and I am close to running under 40. I feel that goal is reachable now.”
The rest of the winning relay were Kai Sheetz, Andrew Silvis and Ethan Cartwright. They finished in 3 minutes, 30.55 seconds.
Other top finishers for the Panthers at the county meet were Lochlan Bresnahan, who was second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200; Mason Gray took second in the 200; the 3,200 relay was second; Andrew Petrucci took second in the discus; and Jay Austin was the runner-up in the long jump.
Maria Piraino and Jamie Kociela were the only Panthers’ girls gold medalists. Piraino won the javelin (118 feet, 7 inches), while Kociela won the high jump (5-6).
Team playoffs
The Franklin Regional track and field teams opened the WPIAL 3A playoffs April 28.
The boys team lost to Hempfield, 76-74, and fell short of advancing to the WPIAL finals May 5 at West Mifflin.
Franklin Regional’s girls team lost 86-64 to Hempfield. Both Spartans teams moved on to the WPIAL finals.
Feeling a draft
Any WPIAL school that has had an NFL draft pick in their history had a current player represent them at the NFL Draft.
Among the players on stage outside of Acrisure Stadium were Franklin Regional lineman Troy Slezak, Norwin linebacker Josh Lenart and Jeannette quarterback Kymon’e Brown.
More than 60 schools were represented as players were part of a tribute to the legacy of WPIAL football.
Baseball clinches
The Franklin Regional baseball team won seven of nine games and clinched a WPIAL Class 5A playoff spot.
The Panthers were in second place in Section 1 at 7-3 behind Plum, Latrobe and Penn-Trafford with 8-2 records.
Franklin Regional split a two-game series against Plum and has a remaining series against Penn-Trafford.
