Peoples Natural Gas is installing nearly 4,000 feet of new pipeline along Route 22 in Monroeville, a project expected to last into early July.

As part of a modernization upgrade throughout its service area, Peoples crews will install new pipeline along the highway between Old William Penn Highway, near the Murrysville border, and Elliott Road.

Route 22 will be restricted to one westbound lane for the duration of the work, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday. The work is expected to take about 75 days, Peoples officials said.

The company recently proposed raising its average residential customer’s rates by $16 per month to help fund the systemwide infrastructure upgrades.

Peoples said the upgrades will replace aging pipes and decrease greenhouse gas emissions as part of its long-term infrastructure improvement plan, a multiyear push to modernize its aging network. The higher rates also would cover “ongoing business costs,” the utility said in a news release in late March.

The state’s Public Utility Commission must review the rate-increase proposal.
