UPMC said Monday it has reached a “definitive agreement” to take over Trinity Health System, a four-hospital network in Ohio that it’s been eyeing since at least last year.
The deal is expected to close this fall, pending regulatory reviews.
UPMC declined to share financial terms.
Trinity Health System is currently part of the CommonSpirit Health umbrella, a Chicago-based conglomerate of more than 150 hospitals in 24 states. UPMC has upward of 40 hospitals in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland.
Steubenville is the main hub for Trinity Health System. Its West Campus in the city serves as a general hospital, with an emergency room and surgical and medical inpatient units, while the East Campus provides more outpatient and long-term care services.
The system also includes smaller hospitals in Dennison and St. Clairsville as well as primary care facilities, urgent care clinics, a cancer treatment center and more scattered across Eastern Ohio.
“At the heart of this integration is the enduring commitment of both teams to deliver compassionate, high-quality clinical care and exceptional community services to the Ohio Valley,” said Leslie Davis, president and CEO of UPMC. “We appreciate CommonSpirit Health’s thoughtful diligence in choosing UPMC for the transfer of Trinity Health System.”
