The WPIAL team track and field championships will take place Tuesday.
The finals begin at 3:30 p.m.
Class 3A will take place at West Mifflin High School and Class 2A at Peters Township.
Norwin is the returning boys and girls champion. The boys defeated Butler, North Allegheny and Mt. Lebanon in the 2025 finals, and the girls toppled North Allegheny, Butler and South Fayette.
Quaker Valley boys and girls also swept the 2A titles. The boys defeated Beaver, Shenango and Mohawk, and the girls defeated Carlynton, Laurel and North Catholic.
Norwin, Butler, Hempfield and Seneca Valley are the boys finalists, and Norwin, Hempfield, North Allegheny and Mt. Lebanon are the girls finalists.
In Class 2A, the Quaker Valley boys will defend their title against North Catholic, Greensburg Central Catholic and Riverview, and the Quaker Valley girls will face North Catholic, Laurel and Burrell.
Allegheny County Coaches planning meet in 2027
A new track championship is coming in 2027.
Baldwin track coach Rich Wright said Allegheny County will hold its first track and field championship such as the ones held in Fayette, Westmoreland and Greene/Washington counties. Westmoreland County’s meet is the oldest in the state at 102 years.
Wright said the Allegheny Championship will replace the South Hills Classic and will take place at Baldwin in April.
A date will be announced.
“It would be ideal if all the county meets take place on the same weekend,” Wright said. “The county coaches want this, and it is good for the athletes.”
There is talk that the meet will be held over two days.
Last-chance meets
The last-chance-to-qualify meets will be at Wednesday at Riverside (Ellwood City) and Thursday at California, Pine-Richland and West Mifflin.
Athletes will compete to earn qualifying spots for the WPIAL 3A and 2A championships May 13 at Slippery Rock University.
