Officials from Fox Chapel, O’Hara and Sharpsburg recently contracted with Shields Asphalt Paving for a multimillion-dollar paving project.

The Bakerstown-based company was the lowest of five bidders, according to a report from engineering firm LSSE.

The total cost is about $2.975 million. It included a base award of about $2.911 million plus some additional work in Sharpsburg.

Fox Chapel’s portion is about $1.469 million with about $47,000 for utility patches that will be reimbursed by utility companies.

O’Hara will pay about $1.228 million, and Sharpsburg will pay about $140,000.

The Fox Chapel Authority also is involved in the paving project. It will pay about $138,000.

Fox Chapel Council voted on its part of the project April 20. O’Hara Council voted April 14. Sharpsburg Council voted April 23.

Fox Chapel Manager Julie Bastianini said the benefit of doing a joint repair program is getting lower prices due to a higher volume of work.

O’Hara engineer Charles Steinert said he anticipates construction to take place sometime between June and August.

A preconstruction meeting setting the schedule was not complete as of press time.

Harrison Lauer, vice president of Fox Chapel Council, said it is important for all councils to prioritize infrastructure upgrades.

“We are certainly proud of our roads in Fox Chapel,” Lauer said. “We have budgeted to repave our streets timely, so they always stay in fine condition. This has been a priority for our residents, and we are blessed with a team that can make it happen.”
