Pitt’s major roster retool had largely cooled off since mid-April, when the Panthers were busy restocking their ranks with a flurry of transfers.
But on Friday, the reinforcements for Jeff Capel and Co. grew, as Division II (Concord University, W.Va.) forward Kraig Gilbert became the ninth player from the portal to choose Pitt.
Gilbert, a 6-foot-9 player who averaged 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game, announced his intentions on social media.

In transferring to Pitt, he joins guards Naithan George (Syracuse/Georgia Tech), Jonathan Powell (North Carolina/West Virginia), Jalil Bethea (Alabama/Miami), A’Lahn Sumler (Charleston Southern) and Colin Hawkins (Gardner-Webb) plus Georgia Tech big man Baye Ndongo, Mercer center Armani Mighty and forward Dominique Diamante (BYU/Washington).
Those nine replace nearly the entirety of Pitt’s scholarship contributors from a season ago, which saw the Panthers go 13-20 (5-13 ACC): guards Brandin Cummings, Omari Witherspoon and Nojus Indrusaitis; forwards Roman Siulepa, Henry Lau and Papa Amadou Kante; plus center Kieran Mullen.
The Concord Mountain Lions compete in the Division II Mountain East Conference, which includes Point Park.
Last season, Gilbert’s squad went 15-15 (10-10), largely without him, as he was limited to 14 games due to injury.
When healthy, he ranked second on his team in scoring and shot 55.2% from the field. Notably, the big man was a major threat from 3-point range, as he managed a 48% (36 of 75) make rate from behind the arc.
A native of Grove City, Ohio, Gilbert will be a junior this upcoming season.
As a true freshman in 2024-25, he averaged 9.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game as a full-time starter for Concord.
