Quaker Valley’s Jonah Montagnese was one of five record-breakers May 1 at the annual Pine-Richland Invitational.

Montagnese broke a meet record with a time of 4 minutes, 10.77 seconds in the 1,600 meters and also won the 800 and two-mile run.

His younger sister Lucy won the 3,200 and two-mile run at Pine-Richland, and Mia Gartley finished first in the 800.

Montagnese is the top seed in the 800 (1:55.49), 1,600 (4:10.77) and 3,200 (8:56.16) in the WPIAL Class 2A boys track and field championships set for May 13 at Slippery Rock.

Kieran Cain, a junior, also is the top seed in the 200 with a time of 21.75, as is sophomore Connor Dwyer in the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches) and the Quakers’ 400 relay with a time of 43.09.

Senior Mimi Thiero is the top seed in the girls high jump with a height of 5-6.

SA boys lacrosse rolls past Allderdice

The Sewickley Academy boys lacrosse team racked up a season-high 21 goals April 29 in a nonsection game against City League foe Allderdice.

The Panthers won 21-1 to extend their late-season winning streak to four games. Two individual highlights for Sewickley included junior attacker Jack Bruno netting three goals to reach 100 points for his career and senior defender Jack Carlson scoring his first career goal.

Sewickley also defeated Shaler, 21-11, in early April, and thwarted North Catholic, 20-2, and Knoch, 20-7, this season. The Panthers were 6-2 in the month of April.

Zyroll tosses no-hitter

Quaker Valley’s Brody Zyroll, a freshman pitcher, threw a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts in his team’s 17-0 win May 4 against Sto-Rox in Section 1-3A.

Senior C/OF Brad Semonik doubled and drove in two runs for QV; senior SS/P Todd Kagle had a single, double and two RBIs; and junior 3B/OF Kolton Johnson tripled and knocked in a run.

Quaker Valley scored 17 runs on only eight hits but also drew 10 walks and had three hit batsmen.

Quakers softball team tops Freedom

Senior third baseman Gemma Wiegand went 4 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Quaker Valley softball team to a 10-2 win May 4 against Freedom in Section 2-3A.

Olivia Hoose, a senior pitcher, struck out eight in seven innings for the Quakers, giving up seven hits and one run. She also belted a home run.

Playoff-bound

Section 3-A baseball titlist Eden Christian Academy and the section’s third-place team, Sewickley Academy, qualified for the WPIAL playoffs this season, as did Quaker Valley in Class 3A.

The Quakers ended up fourth in Section 1-3A.

QV tennis success

Fifth-seeded Quaker Valley knocked off No. 1 Blackhawk, 3-2, in the Class 2A boys tennis team semifinals, reaching the WPIAL championship match at Washington & Jefferson against No. 2 North Catholic.

North Catholic was a 3-2 winner over Indiana in the semifinals.
