Milkweed giveaway set at community garden

The Penn Hills Monarch and Milkweed Project plant giveaway will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 at the Penn Hills Community Garden, 1162 Jefferson Road.

In an effort to help reverse the decline of the monarch butterfly population in North America, seedlings of common, butterfly and swamp milkweed will be given to Penn Hills residents.

Work on Universal Road to impact traffic through August

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works is planning periodic lane closures on Universal Road between Jefferson Road and Keefer Drive in Penn Hills, starting May 20.

The periodic closures are expected to end in August.

Work will include milling and paving, base repairs, drainage improvements, curb installation and the replacement of guiderails, signs and pavement markings.

Flaggers will be used to control traffic at work zones, and drivers should expect delays in the area.

Universal Road is used by an average of 9,218 vehicles every day.

A. Folino Construction of Oakmont is the primary construction contractor for the project, which is part of a $3.2 million contract that includes work on three other roads.

Monthly community meals open to all

The community is invited to attend a free community dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 3 at Hebron Community Center’s Barclay Building, 10460 Frankstown Road.

Meals will be served until 6:15 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.

$1 million Powerball ticket sold in Penn Hills

If you purchased a Powerball lottery ticket at Smoker Friendly in Penn Hills, you might want to check it.

A Powerball ticket worth $1 million from the Wednesday, April 29, drawing was sold at the store along Rodi Road, according to the Pennsylvania Lottery.

The ticket matched all five of the white balls drawn: 3-19-35-51-67.

The retailer at 511 Rodi Road will earn a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

It was one of four lottery locations across Pennsylvania that sold $1 million-winning Powerball tickets. The other locations were in Erie County, Montgomery County and Philadelphia.

These winning tickets were sold leading up to the 10th drawing in this Powerball jackpot run, which ended when two jackpot-winning tickets were sold in Indiana and Kansas. Those tickets will split the jackpot prize of $143 million.

Winners are not known until prizes are claimed and tickets are validated. They have one year from the drawing date to claim prizes.

$482,557 fast play ticket sold at Mauro’s

Lady Luck seems to be on a roll lately in Penn Hills.

A progressive top prize-winning ticket worth $482,557 for the Making Money game from the Pennsylvania Lottery was sold Sunday, May 3, at Mauro’s Corner Pizza & Deli (Exxon) in Penn Hills.

The retailer at 7409 Saltsburg Road will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winner has one year to claim the prize.

Making Money is $20 Fast Play game that offers progressive top prizes starting at $400,000. Fast Play games print on demand from a Pennsylvania Lottery sales terminal or self-service touchscreen vending terminal and are similar to scratch-off games, but without the need to scratch a ticket or wait for a drawing.

Church plans used book sale, bake sale

Faith Community Church at 501 Jefferson Road in Penn Hills is organizing a used book sale and bake sale in May.

The weekend event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 and 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17.

The cost is $8 per bag of books, and bags will be provided.

All proceeds will support the church’s Angel Tree recipients.

Crescent Hills group gearing up for annual plant sale

The Crescent Hills Civic Association is hosting its annual Community Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to noon May 23 in Crescent Hills Park, 141 Sycamore Drive.

The sale raises money for park improvements and programs in the neighborhood.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library offers free books to children up to age 5.

Penn Hills Class of 1976 will host its 50th class reunion at 6 to 11 p.m. June 6 at The Westin Pittsburgh, Downtown.

Course available to drivers 55 and older

Seniors for Safe Driving is offering an upcoming course for motorists 55 and older from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 23 at the Penn Hills Senior Center, 147 Jefferson Road.

The PennDOT-approved course is an opportunity for older motorists to refresh their driving skills and their knowledge of the rules of the road.

There is no testing or behind-the-wheel driving. Participants who complete the course can receive a three-year discount of no less that 5% on their auto insurance.

Course highlights include one’s health and driving performance; effects of medication and alcohol on driving; yielding and intersections; strategies for safe passing and managing one’s speed; keeping up with vehicle technology; preventive ways to reduce driver distractions;, proper use of safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes; defensive driving tactics and sharing the road; dealing with aggressive drivers and road rage situations; and the latest information on traffic laws and regulations.

Mt. Hope Community Church, 12106 Frankstown Road, operates a free Clothesline to people in need from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday.
