Flea market on tap
The Oakmont American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a flea market at 8 a.m. May 16 at Railroad Park, 736 E. Railroad Ave., in Verona.
Spots can be reserved for $15. Spots with a table included cost $20. Donations for the Auxiliary Table are being accepted at the American Legion. No large furniture, TVs or undergarments will be accepted. Pickups may be scheduled upon request.

Oakmont Lions to decorate veterans’ graves
The Oakmont Lions Club will decorate the graves of the 650 veterans buried in the Verona-Oakmont Cemetery for Memorial Day.
Many no longer have family in the area to decorate their graves. The Lions will plant red geraniums on each grave as a way to ensure the veterans are not forgotten.
If you would like to help plant flowers, arrive at the cemetery at 9 a.m. May 23. Bring your own tools to help plant.
To make a donation to help offset the cost of the flowers, send a check to the Oakmont Lions Club, P.O. Box 335 Oakmont, PA 15139.
Plum Scout earns Eagle rank
Ian Bartolomeo, a Plum High School senior and member of Boy Scout Troop 111, earned his Eagle Scout rank April 19.
For his project, Bartolomeo led a team of youth and adult volunteers in building and installing a bike repair station in Boyce Park.
In addition to Scouting, Bartolomeo is a member and leader of the high school marching band and the Plum Bots IQ, battle bots team.
He is attending West Virginia University as a member of the Honors College with plans to major in aerospace engineering and has hopes of working as a flight test engineer.
Plum Class of ‘76 reunion in works
The Plum Class of 1976 will hold its 50-year class reunion on Sept. 12 at VFW Post 92, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road in Lower Burrell. A time has not yet been determined.

Oakmont-Verona Memorial Day Parade plans set
This year’s Oakmont-Verona Memorial Day parade and ceremony kicks off with the parade at 9:30 a.m. May 25. The parade will line up at 9 a.m. on East Railroad Avenue.
The parade route includes three stops for American Legion Post 600 Honor Rifle Guard military salutes:
• The Verona Doughboy
• The Oakmont Library
• The Verona Cemetery in Oakmont
The ceremony at the cemetery is expected to begin around 11 a.m.
This year’s speaker is Nick Lamia, a native of Oakmont and Verona, and a 2015 recipient of the Riverview Distinguished Alumni Award. After graduation, Lamia entered the Army, where he embarked on a 21-year active-duty career.
The ceremony will recognize veterans who have died since last Memorial Day. It will be livestreamed on the Oakmont Historically Facebook page around 11 a.m.

Shoe drive fundraising event set for ovarian cancer coalition
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s Great Lakes Region is holding a shoe drive through the end of the month to support ovarian cancer patients, caregivers and research.
Shoes can be donated at Superior Family Medicine, 135 Allegheny Ave. in Oakmont, or arrange a donation by contacting Stephanie Archer at 412 526 0922 or slarcher98@yahoo.com.
The fundraiser, led by the NOCC team Archer’s Army, will benefit the Great Lakes Region’s Together in Teal Walk. Gently worn, used and new shoes are being collected, with funds raised based on the total weight of donations.
Funds2Orgs will purchase the donated shoes and issue a check to the NOCC Great Lakes Region.
The donated shoes will be distributed through Funds2Orgs’ network of entrepreneurs and small-business partners in developing countries. These partners rely on shoe sales to support their families by providing food, clothing and housing, while building sustainable local businesses.
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition aims to save lives through the prevention and cure of ovarian cancer and to improve the quality of life for survivors and their caregivers.
Archer’s Army was founded in 2016 after Archer’s ovarian cancer diagnosis. All money raised through Archer’s Army stays within the local community.
Church plans used-book sale, bake sale
Faith Community Church at 501 Jefferson Road in Penn Hills is organizing a used-book sale and bake sale.
The event this weekend will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16 and 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17.
The cost is $8 per bag of books, and bags will be provided.
All proceeds will support the church’s Angel Tree recipients.
Kerr Museum May Day event set
A Victorian May Day celebration is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17 at the Kerr Museum in Oakmont.
The event will include self-guided tours, character reenactments, children’s games and activities, and dancing around the Maypole.
The event is free; donations are appreciated.
Group offers support for weight loss
All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight.
With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.
You may visit with no obligation Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Weigh-in is private followed by a brief business meeting, sharing time, and educational program all ending by 7:15.

Food pantry offers help
The Plum Food Pantry, 81 Sandune Drive, distributes free food from 4:30 to 6 p.m. the first three Tuesdays of each month for Plum residents. Residents in need must stop in at the pantry to be certified/verified.

Association of University People
The Association of University People invites singles 50 and older who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at local outside concerts and wineries.

Twin-Boro Van Service
Oakmont’s Riverview Community Action Corp. is offering the Twin-Boro Van Service to seniors 60 and older living in Verona, Oakmont and the Verona Hilltop neighborhood of Penn Hills.
Travelers can create and schedule trips throughout any of the aforementioned neighborhoods through ACCESS, a shared-ride, door-to-door paratransit service in Allegheny County, sponsored by Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
Rides cost $1 per one-way trip. Riders do not need to be members of the RCAC to use the service.
