Last year, eight was enough for Riverview baseball to reach the Class 2A district semifinals. The Raiders scored a combined eight runs in wins over California and Burgettstown.

On Monday, eight was significant again as the No. 4 Raiders needed eight innings to knock off No. 13 Frazier at West Mifflin, 5-4.

Miles Duncan first drove home the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out double off the left-field fence that scored Ian Stempfer to make it 4-4.

In the eighth inning with two outs again, Duncan’s drive to left fell in to score Liam Thompson, who had led off the inning with a single.

Rex Roberts was the winning pitcher, yielding only one hit in 3 ⅔ scoreless innings in relief of Riverview starter Owen Metz.

Tyler Morrison, Noah Bachinski and Eli Cernuska had two hits each for Frazier (9-10).

Riverview (13-6) will face No. 5 Laurel in the quarterfinals next Monday.

Apollo-Ridge 2, Shenango 1 — Noah Stewart hit a two-run single in the third inning to lead No. 7 Apollo-Ridge (12-8) to a Class 2A first-round win. Brody Henderson gave up one run on five hits in a complete game for the Vikings, who will face No. 2 Neshannock in next Monday’s quarterfinals. Jack Kielar went 2 for 3 with an RBI for No. 10 Shenango (11-9).

Aquinas Academy 2, Avella 1 – Brendan Roney hit a triple and drove in a run and Patrick Richthammer had a single and two RBIs to lead No. 11 Aquinas Academy (11-5) in a Class A first-round win. Tim Crawford allowed two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks for the Crusaders, who will meet No. 3 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals next Monday. Tristan Davis singled and drove in a run for No. 6 Avella (10-8).

California 3, Freedom 1 – A bases-loaded walk to Eli Carpenter in the third inning proved to be the winning run for No. 8 California (14-6) in a Class 2A first-round matchup. Zach Kuntz went 3 for 3 and Garrett Drutarosky doubled for No. 9 Freedom (8-11). Weston Monticelli allowed one run on four hits in a complete-game win and Logan Hartley drove in a run for the Trojans, who will face No. 1 Fort Cherry in the quarterfinals next Monday.

Carmichaels 7, Sewickley Academy 4 – Dominic Yazzani doubled and drove in two runs and Chase Ankrom had two singles and two RBIs to lead No. 8 Carmichaels (9-9) to a Class A first-round win. Austin Fritz went 2 for 4 with an RBI for No. 9 Sewickley Academy (8-10). The Mighty Mikes will face No. 1 Eden Christian in the quarterfinals next Monday.

Hampton 7, Belle Vernon 1 – Caleb Custer went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI and Eric Carson doubled and drove in a run for No. 12 Hampton (13-8) in a Class 4A first-round win. Cole Motchenbaugh had a single and two RBIs for the Talbots, who will meet No. 13 Derry in the quarterfinals next Monday. Custer, Zach Virbitsky and Drew Bucci combined to hold the No. 5 Leopards to one run on six hits. Jordan Jerome went 2 for 3 with a double and triple and Jaden Johnson singled and drove in a run for Belle Vernon (14-6).

Hopewell 5, Ringgold 3 – Benjamin McDonald went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, Charles Smetana doubled and drove in a run and Logan Triscila went 2 for 2 with a double for No. 6 Hopewell (15-5) in a Class 4A first-round win. Derek Dunlevy hit an RBI double and Ashton Mincon went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI for No. 11 Ringgold (9-11). Kingston Krotec had a single and double for the Vikings, who will face No. 3 Valley in the quarterfinals Monday.

Jefferson-Morgan 6, Union 2 – Deakyn Dehoet went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and Evan Kniha had a single and two RBIs to lead No. 7 Jefferson-Morgan (12-9) to a Class A first-round win. Maddox Ryhal went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Colton Cox singled and drove in a run for No. 10 Union (6-11). Brayden Ellsworth went 4 for 4 with an RBI for the Rockets, who will meet No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Knoch 2, Blackhawk 1 — Carter Beres went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI and Kaden Dreher doubled and scored a run to lead No. 8 Knoch (13-8) to a Class 4A first-round win. Starter Zane Pacek gave up one run on three hits in 4⅔ and Hunter Lang came on to throw 2⅓ scoreless innings for the Knights, who will meet top-seeded Indiana in next Monday’s quarterfinals. Logan Elich had a single and RBI for No. 9 Blackhawk (11-7).

Laurel 7, Burgettstown 0 – Luca Santini threw a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for No. 5 Laurel (11-6) in a Class 2A first-round win. Kolton Carlson went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI and William Zwolenik went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI for the Spartans, who will meet No. 4 Riverview in the quarterfinals Monday. Jayden Roach had the lone hit for No. 12 Burgettstown (8-12).

New Brighton 7, OLSH 2 – Carter Jackson went 3 for 3 with a double, triple and two RBIs and Dom Pasquale went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead No. 11 New Brighton (9-7) to a Class 2A first-round win. Ethan Shanor hit a triple for the Lions, who will face No. 3 South Side in Monday’s quarterfinal. Colby Lane went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ryan DeNinno and Christian Bush doubled for No. 6 OLSH (13-7).

West Mifflin 2, Ambridge 1 – Jackson Fite threw six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven, to lead No. 7 West Mifflin (14-6) to a Class 4A first round win. Derek Tudek went 2 for 3 with a double, Eli Kurta doubled and drove in a run and Dakota Leister tripled and scored for the Titans, who will meet No. 2 Elizabeth Forward in the quarterfinals Monday. Joe Leseiko doubled for No. 10 Ambridge (8-10).

Softball

Hampton 14, Greensburg Salem 4 — Addi Hanna went 3 for 3 with a double and home run, and Cara Ibinson went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs to power No. 4 Hampton (14-5) past No. 13 Greensburg Salem (5-9) in the Class 4A first round. The Talbots advance to play No. 12 Uniontown (11-8).

The Golden Lions (5-9) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, but the Talbots had a 7-2 lead after the first inning. It was 7-4 in the third and Hampton made a pitching change, replacing Josie Fritsch with Marissa Snyder. The latter didn’t allow another run as the Talbots added on. Teresa Fritsch had a two-run double, Josie Fritsch was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Victoria Holtz, the No. 9 hitter, was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Talbots.

Hannah Olbeter was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Patty Redinger hit a solo homer for Greensburg Salem.

Moon 5, Upper St. Clair 4 – Katie DeMarco went 3 for 4 and Brooklyn Hall tripled and drove in two runs to lead No. 16 Moon (10-10) to a preliminary round win in Class 5A. Rachel Scharrer hit a home run and Brooklyn Kemp had a single, double and RBI for No. 17 Upper St. Clair (9-10). The Tigers will face No. 1 Shaler in the first round Tuesday.

North Catholic 5, West Mifflin 4 – Dakota Hicks hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of 10th for No. 7 North Catholic (13-5) in a Class 4A first-round win. Bella Simak hit a go-ahead RBI single in top of the 10th for No. 10 West Mifflin (12-9). Mary Kotwica went 3 for 4 with a double, two triples and an RBI and Clare Kotwica gave up one unearned run with seven strikeouts in 7⅔ innings for North Catholic, which will meet No. 2 Knoch in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Uniontown 5, Indiana 3 – Sequoia Dunlap doubled and drove in two runs and Graci Rodeheaver had a double and an RBI to lead No. 12 Uniontown (11-8) to a first-round upset in Class 4A. Winning pitcher Emmaleigh Noah and Alivia Noah each had two hits and an RBI and Katie White singled and doubled for the Red Raiders, who will face No. 4 Hampton in the quarterfinals Thursday. Rachel Livermore went 2 for 3 with a home run and Hannah Ianarelli doubled and drove in a run for No. 5 Indiana (14-6).

Girls lacrosse

Franklin Regional 17, Seton LaSalle 4 – Emerson Funari scored six goals to lead No. 5 Franklin Regional (12-4) to a first-round win over No. 12 Seton LaSalle (5-13) in Class 2A. Isabella Ioannou scored five goals, Leah Wagner added four and Savannah Vollero had two for the Panthers, who will face No. 4 South Fayette in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

In other first-round games Monday, No. 8 Oakland Catholic (11-5) earned a 14-8 win over No. 9 Freeport (8-7), No. 10 Chartiers Valley (7-7) picked up a 6-4 win over No. 7 Indiana (11-4), and No. 6 Blackhawk (8-6) claimed a 22-2 victory against No. 11 Trinity (9-7).

For Freeport, Macey Edwards had four goals and an assist, Sophia Glass two goals and an assist, Ky Rogers a goal and an assist and Natalia Urik a goal.
