Dillon Pomocki walked and came around to score on an error in the top of the sixth to provide the decisive run for the Gladiators (10-9), who will face No. 7 Riverside in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Hard-luck losing pitcher Michael Cejrowski gave up three hits and struck out seven in a complete game for the Rebels (14-3).
Avonworth 6, Waynesburg 0 – Cooper Scharding struck out eight across five innings to lead No. 1 Avonworth (16-5) to a Class 3A opening-round win. Scharding also went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to help his cause. Jack Dolan doubled and had an RBI and Carter Latore tripled and had two RBIs for the Antelopes, who will face No. 9 Charleroi in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Grant Pack and Kory Taylor both doubled for No. 16 Waynesburg (7-13).
Bethel Park 6, Latrobe 1 – No. 11 seed Bethel Park pulled an upset against No. 6 Latrobe in the 5A first round. Nick Rillo went 3 for 3 with a double, a walk and an RBI, Akron commit Mike Bruckner went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Eric Miehl had a two-run double, and Ben Thomas had two hits for the Black Hawks (13-8), who will play No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (17-4) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Matt Hughes and Bruckner combined to take a shutout into the seventh, limiting the Wildcats (17-4) to six hits. Chase White also had an RBI for the Black Hawks, who made the semifinals last year and the finals in ‘24. Noah Noel had a single and an RBI for Latrobe.
Burrell 2, Mohawk 0 – Brayden Mell threw a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out three, to lead No. 11 Burrell to an upset of No. 6 Mohawk in the first round in Class 3A. Rayden Shirey hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth to account for the game’s only runs. The Bucs (11-9) will meet No. 3 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Hard-luck losing pitcher Bobby Fadden gave up two unearned runs on five hits for the Warriors (14-6).
Ellwood City 3, Ligonier Valley 0 – Winning pitcher Aaron Lake allowed three hits and struck out six in 6⅔ innings to lead No. 3 Ellwood City (16-3) to a Class 3A first-round victory. Nate Kennedy got the final two outs and Jake Biskup, Geordan Bokor and Matt Kelly each had two hits and an RBI for the Wolverines, who will face No. 11 Burrell in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Jake Petalino doubled for No. 14 Ligonier Valley (10-11).
Freeport 5, Quaker Valley 2 – Luke Whitfield went 2 for 3 with a home run and Gage Blystone struck out 15 in a complete-game win, leading No. 4 Freeport (18-1) to a Class 3A first-round win. Owen Westendorf singled and drove in two runs, Danny King had a single and an RBI and Gavin Tola doubled twice for the Yellowjackets, who will meet No. 5 South Park in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Rocco Fardo singled and drove in two runs to give No. 13 Quaker Valley (8-12) a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Montour 6, West Allegheny 5 – Tyler Puffer (2 for 5, two RBIs) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give No. 8 Montour a Class 5A first-round win. Michael Ivanoff went 3 for 5 for the Spartans, while winning pitcher Gavin Foley struck out five across three innings. Brysan Zirwas went 2 for 4, homered and had two RBI and Zac Lucas went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for No. 9 West Allegheny (12-9). Montour will face No. 1 Pine Richland in the quarterfinals next Tuesday.
Moon 17, Baldwin 1 – Nick Machusko went 3 for 3 with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs to power No. 4 Moon (16-4) to a Class 5A first-round win. Andrew Cross went 4 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs and Owen Amey went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Tigers, who will face No. 12 Upper St. Clair in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Winning pitcher Chris Sandor struck out five across three innings, giving up one run on five hits. Nico Macurak and Ty Geary doubled while Gavin Stock went 2 for 3 for No. 13 Baldwin (11-9).
Pine-Richland 15, Connellsville 0 – Logan Plummer pitched three scoreless innings, striking out six and walking one, to lead No. 1 Pine Richland (16-5) to a Class 5A opening-round win. Ben Husted went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs, Ty Cownie went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Kyler Bell went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Rams, who will face No. 8 Montour in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Caden Matthews doubled for No. 16 Connellsville (9-12)
Riverside 3, Shady Side Academy 2 – Brock James walked it off with an RBI double to give No. 7 Riverside (11-7) the Class 3A opening-round win. Jackson Barber went 2 for 4 with a double and Dylan Meyer doubled and knocked in a run for the Panthers, who will face No. 15 South Allegheny in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Ty McCaskey went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Leland Wilson tripled for Shady Side Academy (11-9).
Thomas Jefferson 3, Mars 2 – Justin Fry hit a walk-off RBI single to lead No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (17-4) to a Class 5A first-round victory. Eli Graff doubled and had an RBI while Calvin Caterino singled and knocked in a run for the Jaguars, who will face No. 11 Bethel Park in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Grady Speigle went 2 for 4 with a double and Shane Creighan doubled and had an RBI for No. 14 Mars (8-12).
Kiski School 12, Western Reserve 3 – Winning pitcher Cy Zufall went 3 for 3 with a double, Cheo Stevenson doubled and scored and Josh Wang doubled and drove in a run to lead Kiski School (7-3) past Western Reserve.

Allderdice 17, Obama Academy 1 – Madison Hultz hit a grand slam and Gracie Whitt and Lital Friedman each doubled and drove in three runs to lead Allderdice (10-4) in the City League semifinals. The Dragons will meet Carrick in the finals Monday. Harmony Tillman went 2 for 2 with a triple and RBI for Obama Academy (7-4).
Armstrong 8, Fox Chapel 6 – Josie Porter doubled and homered and Anniston Andryka and Lily Gutherie each had three hits, including a homer, to lead No. 8 Armstrong (12-8) to a Class 5A first-round win. Sophia Shumaker singled, doubled and drove in a run for the River Hawks, who will face No. 1 Shaler in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Giuliana Foley and Izzy Zober homered and Ella Eisner went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI for No. 9 Fox Chapel (14-6).
Baldwin 4, Kiski Area 3 – Mackenzie Bowen hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh as No. 5 Baldwin (17-4) fended off an upset bid by No. 12 Kiski Area (14-6) in the Class 5A first round. Winning pitcher Melina DeFelice struck out 12 in a complete game and helped her own cause with a single and an RBI for the Highlanders, who will meet No. 4 West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Thursday. Dakota Rainey had two hits and an RBI and Alyssa Perona tripled for the Cavaliers.
Canon-McMillan 7, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Lyla Mowery threw a complete-game five-hit shutout to lead No. 4 Canon-McMillan (9-10) to a Class 6A first-round win. Addy Jordon went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs while Lyla Yakubik went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Big Macs, who will face No. 1 Hempfield in the quarterfinals next Tuesday. Rebecca Davis went 3 for 3 with two doubles for No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (8-12).
Carrick 16, Perry Traditional Academy 0 – Winning pitcher Jayda Rose struck out nine in three innings and homered twice with four RBIs to lead Carrick (15-2) in a City League semifinal win. Jaelyn Klodowski went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, Dana Jones went 3 for 3 with two triples and an RBI and Isla Mazza went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI for the Raiders, who will meet Allderdice in the finals Monday.
North Hills 5, Montour 1 – Abigail Sutton tossed a complete game, striking out seven and giving up six hits, to lead No. 11 North Hills (1-7) to a Class 5A first-round win. Sutton also went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Emma Culver went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Indians, who will face No. 3 Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals Thursday. Emily McClean went 2 for 4 and tripled for No. 6 Montour (12-6).
Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 2 – Aria Smith had two hits and an RBI and Mackenzie Cox and Torrie DeStefano drove in a run each as No. 3 Penn-Trafford (18-3) held off No. 14 Connellsville (12-9) in the Class 5A first round. Allyson Paulone struck out six in a complete game for the Warriors, who will take on No. 11 North Hills in the quarterfinals Thursday. Addison Smith and Cali Leichliter homered for the Falcons.
Shaler 10, Moon 0 – Bria Bosiijevac threw a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead No. 1 Shaler (18-1) to a Class 5A opening-round win over No. 17 Moon (10-11). Addy Aleski went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Alyssa Schafford went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs and Jayla Antomachi went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for the Titans, who will face No. 8 Armstrong in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Thomas Jefferson 3, South Fayette 2 – Jemma Danko went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (15-3) to a Class 5A opening-round win. Caroline Kelly went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Liv Bonacci went doubled for No. 15 South Fayette (10-9). The Jaguars will face No. 10 Plum in the quarterfinals Thursday
West Allegheny 11, Latrobe 1 – Madison Maritz doubled twice and drove in four runs and Charlie Resetar went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead No. 4 West Allegheny (13-3) to a Class 5A first-round win. Hayden Martin tripled and drove in a run and Alexis Santucci had two hits and two RBIs for West A, which will meet No. 5 Baldwin in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Maddie Muchinski singled and drove in a run for No. 13 Latrobe (10-9).

Derry 3, Trinity 0 – Caden Marsh had 13 kills, John Kerin finished with 24 digs and Landon Campbell handed out 30 assists to lead No. 6 Derry (13-3) to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 11 Trinity (8-11). Jaiden Beeman added seven kills for the Trojans, who will visit No. 3 South Fayette in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Montour 3, North Catholic 0 – Chris Burik had 10 kills and three blocks, Isaiah Henderson finished with eight kills and 16 digs, Owen Ireland had 30 digs and Wyatt Bucek added five kills and three blocks to lead No. 7 Montour (10-6) past No. 10 North Catholic (6-10) in the Class 2A first round. The Spartans will visit No. 2 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Other Class 2A winners Tuesday were No. 8 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, No. 4 Deer Lakes and No. 5 Thomas Jefferson.
Penn-Trafford 3, Fox Chapel 1 – Ethan McDonald had 16 kills, Billy Spena dished out 44 assists and Rylan Kiste had 12 digs to lead No. 6 Penn-Trafford (10-7) to a Class 3A first-round win over No. 11 Fox Chapel (9-8). Matthew Eguaoje added 14 kills, Owen Hodge had 12 and Brayden Tirpak finished with 10 kills and five blocks for the Warriors, who will visit No. 3 Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Other Class 3A winners Tuesday were No. 8 Peters Township, No. 4 Baldwin, No. 12 Mt. Lebanon and No. 7 Upper St. Clair.
Boys tennis
Class 3A – WPIAL champion North Allegheny and runner-up Upper St. Clair advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals in Hershey. The Tigers swept Dallastown, 3-0, and the Panthers defeated City League champ Allderdice, 4-1.
Upper St. Clair won all three singles points in closely contested matches. At No. 1, Carter Lichtman beat Barak Raz, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. At No. 2, Sidney Weissert got past Alex Friedman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3, Ethan Yealy beat Kiran Arunachalam, 6-3, 7-5.
The teams split the doubles matches with Will Kuchera and Ari Paris of Allderdice winning in straight sets and Daniel Smith and Rex Wantje of Upper St. Clair winning in three sets.
Class 2A – WPIAL champ Quaker Valley and runner-up North Catholic advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals in Hershey. Quaker Valley won by forfeit over Brashear, and North Catholic swept District 9 champ DuBois Catholic, 5-0. WPIAL third seed Blackhawk lost 5-0 to District 10 champ Erie Cathedral Prep.
North Catholic won all five matches in straight sets. Singles players Justin Garvey, Alex Weber and Jake Sinclair dropped a total of eight games between them. The doubles teams of Paddy McCabe with Lenny Splane and Jackson Schlegel lost five games between them.
