With the district track and field championships postponed until Thursday, the Wednesday playoff schedule belongs to WPIAL boys and girls lacrosse postseason action.

The WPIAL boys Class 3A lacrosse bracket was the smallest of the four district postseason tournaments with only eight teams.

So that bracket opens up play Wednesday with four quarterfinal matches.

For the third consecutive postseason, northern rivals North Allegheny and Pine-Richland will meet in the boys 3A quarterfinals.

In 2024, the Tigers advanced with a tight victory, 11-8.

Last spring, again it was close with NA edging the Rams, 7-6.

Now No. 5 Pine-Richland will see if the third time is a charm as it visits No. 4 North Allegheny at 7 p.m.

The Rams are 9-7 and the Tigers come in with a record of 6-3.

North Allegheny defeated Pine-Richland earlier this season, 10-5.

Here are the other three 3A boys playoff quarters at starting at 7 p.m.:

• Top seed and defending champion Mt. Lebanon (14-1) will host No. 8 Hempfield (7-9). In their meeting in March, the Blue Devils rolled past the Spartans, 19-2.

• No. 2 Fox Chapel (14-2) is home to No. 7 Canon-McMillan (12-4). In a nonsection match last month, the Foxes beat the Big Macs, 13-2.

• No. 6 Upper St. Clair (6-7) visits No. 3 Shady Side Academy (8-5). These two met in a nonsection match last month with the Bulldogs beating the Panthers, 15-9.

You can hear both the Pine-Richland at North Allegheny match and the USC at SSA contest on Trib HSSN.

Into the quarterfinals

Unlike the boys 3A, the girls 2A tournament began Monday with four first-round matches.

Now those four winners are set to visit the top four seeds that all enjoyed opening-round byes.

Seven of the eight girls 2A quarterfinalists this season were also in the elite eight a year ago.

The lone exception is Franklin Regional.

The Panthers were the No. 9 seed last spring and fell in the opening round to Oakland Catholic, 11-9.

On Monday, Emerson Funari scored six goals as Franklin Regional eliminated Seton LaSalle, 17-4.

Ironically, it was the Rebels who were in the 2025 quarterfinals but not part of the 2026 quarters.

No. 5 Franklin Regional now visits No. 4 South Fayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Panthers are 12-4 while the Lions finished the regular season at 10-6.

The two teams did not meet in the regular season.

Here are the other three 2A girls playoff quarters beginning at 7 p.m.:

• Top-seeded Mars (16-1) will host No. 8 Oakland Catholic (11-5). The Eagles defeated Freeport in the opening round, 14-5. OC and Mars did not play each other in the regular season.

• No. 2 Hampton (12-4) is home to No. 10 Chartiers Valley (7-7). The Colts upended Indiana in the first round, 6-4.

• No. 6 Blackhawk (9-6) will visit No. 3 Quaker Valley (14-2). In Round 1, the Cougars crushed Trinity, 22-2. These two are Section 2-2A foes and the Quakers won their regular season meeting, 19-10.
