In one of its main business hubs off Tarentum Bridge Road, New Kensington is slated for two new destinations — a Rural Urgent Care and a Chipotle.

“We’re getting a lot of nice improvements in the Tarentum Bridge corridor there and the city’s always happy to see new developments,” city Engineer Tony Males said.

City council last week put the final stamp of approval on the city’s first urgent care, which will go on a half-acre parcel between the Giant Eagle and the Ramada Inn.

Right now, the parcel is an undeveloped grassy space, said Males.

He said construction likely will start in late summer as the Alabama-based owners still need to get a building permit from the city, erosion and sediment approval from the Westmoreland County Conservation District and a sewage planning module from the Department of Environmental Protection.

“This is the first (Rural Urgent Care) in the Alle-Kiski area,” Males said.

The company has locations across the Southeast part of the country.

Another location is expected to open in Allegheny Township later this year.

The closest urgent care currently to New Kensington is across the Allegheny River on East 10th Avenue in Tarentum.

He said the new location will be more convenient for residents.

“When you’re in a lot of pain, a few minutes is definitely a good thing to get treatment as quick as possible,” Males said.

The clinic will have 15 parking spaces.

City Council unanimously approved the urgent care, said city Clerk John Zavadak.

“Any new development is nice for the city,” Zavadak said. “There’s a lot of development going up in that area.”

Chipotle

In Riverview Plaza, which borders the Giant Eagle Plaza, a Chipotle has been officially approved by the city’s planning commission at their meeting on Tuesday night.

Right now, the closest one is at the The Village at Pittsburgh Mills shopping complex in Frazer.

The New Kensington location will be at the former Donut Connection location.

Males told TribLive in late April that the current building will be demolished and replaced with a new one.

Demolition and construction are expected to start in the late summer or early fall, he said.

Site development would include repaving the parking lot up to the parcel border with the rest of the shopping center, meaning the existing potholes behind the drive-thru would not be included in the repaving.

The Chipotle will have a drive-thru for mobile ordering only, Males said.
