Commonplace Coffee announced plans to open a new bakery cafe in Shadyside, replacing the former Georgie’s Corner Bakery & Café. The new coffee shop, located at 5743 Walnut St., will be Commonplace’s ninth retail coffeehouse location and also move a “significant portion” of its kitchen and baking operations to Pittsburgh from Indiana, Pa., the company said in a joint announcement on social media.
The new coffeehouse will offer a full beverage menu, scratch-made baked goods, grab-and-go breakfasts, and lunch items by Commonplace’s Bakery. It’s slated to open this summer.
“We’re honored to carry this work forward and to help ensure the Shadyside coffeehouse remains a welcoming place to connect over great coffee and fresh baked goods,” Commonplace Coffee founder TJ Fairchild wrote.
Georgie’s Corner Cafe closed permanently in January after four years in business. At the time, co-founder George Saxon said he hoped to find a community-focused new tenant for the space that would “continue our mission of providing a gathering space for the neighborhood.”
“We are so happy that Commonplace Coffee is it!” Saxon wrote in Thursday’s statement. “Commonplace is an excellent fit for the Shadyside neighborhood because Georgie’s customers want delicious coffee that is ethically sourced and roasted locally. Georgie’s was known for exceptional pastries, and the Commonplace culinary team will continue this high standard for the community.”
Commonplace Coffee, a specialty coffee roaster, retailer and wholesaler, was founded by Julie and TJ Fairchild in Indiana, Pa., in 2003. Known for its community-focused coffeehouses, it currently operates six Pittsburgh-area cafes in Garfield, Squirrel Hill, Central Northside, South Side, North Point Breeze and at the Northland Public Library in McCandless, along with two locations in Indiana.
Commonplace’s bakery in Indiana County, first opened in 2015, will continue to operate in a “modified capacity,” the company said in a news release.
A representative of Commonplace Coffee could not be immediately reached on Thursday.
