Kennadi Smith threw a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead No. 7 Keystone Oaks to a 6-0 victory over No. 10 Deer Lakes in the WPIAL Class 3A softball first round Thursday.
Eveline Kyper hit two home runs and Kylie Stahl had a single and two RBIs for the Golden Eagles (16-4), who will meet No. 2 Mohawk in the quarterfinals Monday. Siena Plummer doubled and Ava Shea had two singles for the Lancers (7-13).
Bentworth 5, Burgettstown 0 – Sydney Gonglik threw a complete-game no-hitter with 19 strikeouts and no walks and also went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run for No. 3 Bentworth (18-2) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 14 Burgettstown (7-8). Alexa Babirad went 2 for 3 with a double and Makyla Gonglik drove in two runs for the Bearcats, who will meet No. 6 Shenango in the quarterfinals Monday.
Brownsville 7, South Allegheny 1 – Ava Clark had a single, double and three RBIs, Tavan Ternitsky doubled and drove in a run and Emma Leigh Bailey had two singles and a double for No. 13 Brownsville (13-7) in a Class 2A first-round win. Taylor Bowman went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI for No. 4 South Allegheny (12-7). The Falcons will meet No. 5 Neshannock in the quarterfinals Monday.
Chartiers-Houston 2, Washington 1 – Aubree Randolph tripled and scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Shumar as No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (17-2) held off an upset bid by No. 15 Washington (10-8) in the Class 2A first round. Seanna Riggle singled and drove in a run and winning pitcher Taryne Drilak struck out nine in a complete game for the Bucs, who will face No. 7 Riverside in the quarterfinals Monday. Tationna Warren led off the game with a home run and hard-luck losing pitcher Chessa Henderson gave up two runs on four hits for the Little Prexies.
Frazier 6, Seton LaSalle 3 – Emma Essington and Emme Tarvalena homered and Zoey Zurenski had a single, double and RBI for No. 9 Frazier (12-9) in a Class 2A first-round win. Cheyenne Lamont had a double and three RBIs for No. 8 Seton LaSalle (11-5). The Commodores will meet No. 1 Laurel in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Jefferson-Morgan 18, Leechburg 2 – Emilee Bazzoli went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, Kallyn Novak doubled and drove in three runs and Ava Wood had a double, triple and two RBIs to lead No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan (15-6) to a Class A first-round win. Brooke Cuffia and Ava Carrington singled and drove in a run apiece for No. 12 Leechburg (2-11). The Rockets, who scored all 18 runs in the first inning, will meet No. 4 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals Monday.
Laurel 15, Shady Side Academy 0 – Riley Balcolm threw a three-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts for No. 1 Laurel (14-5) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 16 Shady Side Academy (5-9). Hailey Fell went 2 for 2 with a double, triple and two RBIs, Maddie Evans had two doubles and two RBIs and Hayden Seifert hit a triple and home run for the Spartans, who will meet No. 9 Frazier in the quarterfinals Monday.
McGuffey 7, Hopewell 3 – Sidney Dobrynski had a single, double and two RBIs and Leanna Neff singled and drove in two runs to lead No. 5 McGuffey (10-6) to a Class 3A first-round win. Abigail Babinsack doubled and drove in a run for No. 12 Hopewell (6-9). Winning pitcher Miley Main struck out 12 and allowed three hits for the Highlanders, who will meet No. 4 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals Monday.
Neshannock 11, OLSH 1 – Winning pitcher Gianna Paglia went 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIs, Gabriella Antuono went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs and Jaidon Nogay went 3 for 4 to lead No. 5 Neshannock (15-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. Sydney Trippe doubled and drove in a run for No. 12 OLSH (8-9). The Lancers will face No. 13 Brownsville in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Sewickley Academy 10, Monessen 7 – Winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews struck out 12, doubled and drove in two runs to lead No. 7 Sewickley Academy (10-3) in the Class A first round. Sutton Rea had two doubles and two RBIs and Layla Miller tripled and knocked in two runs for the Panthers, who will face No. 2 Carmichaels in the quarterfinals Monday. Jaz’mein Parker went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI, Grace Clingenpeel went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs and Joey Hurst singled, tripled and knocked in two runs for No. 10 Monessen (7-11).
Shenango 11, Apollo-Ridge 1 – Addison Downing went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Sydney Byerly had two doubles and two RBIs and Brianna Alusia went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead No. 6 Shenango (15-5) to a Class 2A first-round win. Josalin McCauley went 2 for 3 with a double for No. 11 Apollo-Ridge (8-7). The Wildcats will meet No. 3 Bentworth in Monday’s quarterfinals.
South Side 4, Beth-Center 3 – Ariel Poelcher hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to lead No. 6 South Side (10-8) to a Class A first-round win. Bella Stepp went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for No. 11 Beth-Center (5-9). Brooke McNary went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Rams, who will face No. 3 West Greene in the quarterfinals Monday.
Boys lacrosse
Mars 8, Bethel Park 7 – Reed Fuller scored three goals, Jack Tirch and Conner Long had two each and Chase Lamm also scored as No. 3 Mars (13-4) got past No. 6 Bethel Park (11-7) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. David Renner made eight saves for the Fightin’ Planets, who will meet No. 2 Hampton in the semifinals Monday.
The Talbots beat No. 10 Quaker Valley, 18-2. In the other half of the bracket, No. 1 Peters Township defeated No. 9 Indiana, 17-5, and No. 4 South Fayette beat No. 12 Chartiers Valley, 16-2.
Girls lacrosse
Pine-Richland 16, Bethel Park 2 – Claire Mille collected six goals and an assist, Mallory Boivin had four goals and two assists and Cate Gentille finished with three goals and four assists to lead No. 2 Pine-Richland (15-3) past No. 7 Bethel Park (11-5) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Meg Dzialowski scored twice, Willow Cribbs had a goal and an assist, Leyton Carlson also scored and Cara Murray made six saves for the Rams, who will meet No. 3 Upper St. Clair in the semifinals Monday.
The Panthers defeated No. 6 Moon, 18-8. On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Mt. Lebanon ousted No. 8 Shaler, 18-5, and No. 4 Fox Chapel got past No. 5 Penn-Trafford, 12-9.
Boys volleyball
North Allegheny 3, Peters Township 0 – Will Robertson had 10 kills and Brendan Moore added nine as top-seeded North Allegheny (11-0) swept No. 8 Peters Township (12-8) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Cole Galupi had five blocks and Elliot Swierczynski had 22 assists and six digs for the Tigers, who will meet No. 4 Baldwin in the semifinals Monday.
The Highlanders got past No. 12 Mt. Lebanon, 3-2. In the other half of the bracket, No. 2 Butler beat No. 7 Upper St. Clair, 3-1, and No. 3 Seneca Valley swept No. 6 Penn-Trafford, 3-0.
In Class 2A, No. 1 Shaler swept No. 8 OLSH, 3-0, No. 5 Thomas Jefferson ousted No. 4 Deer Lakes, 3-0, No. 2 Seton LaSalle defeated No. 7 Montour, 3-1, and No. 3 South Fayette downed No. 6 Derry, 3-0.
