With the Pittsburgh Penguins entering the offseason after a brief return to the postseason, TribLive will offer Penguins A to Z, a player-by-player look at all 53 individuals signed to an NHL contract — including those whose deals do not begin until future seasons — with the organization.
Starting with veteran Noel Acciari and going on through to prospect Bill Zonnon, every player will be profiled in alphabetical order.
This series is scheduled to be published every day until June 24, two days before the start of the NHL Draft. In the event of a transaction, that schedule will be altered as necessary.

This season: The Penguins have been playing the long game with Fernstrom even before they acquired him.
They had eyes on him going into the 2024 NHL Draft, but saw him get selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round (No. 93 overall). But when they swung the multi-player trade that sent forward Drew O’Connor and defenseman Marcus Pettersson to Vancouver mid-way through the 2024-25 season, they pushed to have Fernstrom added to the bundle of assets that wound up in Pittsburgh.
After a strong 2024-25 season with Orebro of the Swedish Hockey League in which he was named that league’s Rookie of the Year, Fernstrom signed his entry-level contract on June 13.
But Fernstrom remained in his native Sweden with Orebro. Any hopes he would build upon his success from the season prior never materialized, as through the first four months of the season, Fernstrom was limited to three goals.

That futility led to Fernstrom being omitted from Sweden’s roster for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Junior Championship tournament in December.
By Jan. 10, Fernstrom was a healthy scratch for Orebro. Things really bottomed out for him on Jan. 16 when he was loaned to AIK of the Allsvensken, Sweden’s second-tier league.
Penguins management stepped in on Jan. 26 and “called back” Fernstrom, then assigned him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Feb. 4 in order to get him playing time at a high enough level to promote his development.
Fernstrom wasn’t eased into North American hockey as he played his first four AHL games on the left wing of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s top line. From that demanding station, Fernstrom was productive, generating four points (one goal, three assists).

After missing three games in late February and early March due to an undisclosed injury, Fernstrom settled into a role on the third line on either the left or right wing.
By March 22, Fernstrom suffered a suspected right arm injury and has been sidelined ever since.
The future: There is no word on when or if Fernstrom will be able to rejoin Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for its ongoing postseason run, but it’s probably safe to assume Fernstrom will be ready to move on from an underwhelming 2025-26 season.
That said, the campaign wasn’t a complete loss for him as he transitioned to hockey on this continent fairly well when he was healthy. But injuries halted that progress.
It’s important to keep in mind that Fernstrom is still young as he only turned 20 on Feb. 28. He has shown the ability to generate offense while playing against grown men in the SHL and AHL and remains a long-term work in progress.
Fernstrom got a badly needed restart midway through 2025-26. He’ll need another in 2026-27.
