In advance of their series finale at PNC Park vs. Philadelphia Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder/first baseman Ryan O’Hearn on the injured list due to a right quad strain.
The Pirates also activated outfielder Jake Mangum from the 10-day injured list Sunday morning.
O’Hearn started Saturday’s eventual 6-0 loss to Philadelphia at first base but departed the contest after catching a pop up in foul territory near the on-deck circle in the second inning.
“Every time I tried to do more than a walk or slow jog, it just felt like my leg was grabbing on me,” O’Hearn said Saturday evening of his injury.
The 32-year-old also revealed that he underwent an MRI after feeling the discomfort at the top of his right quad near the hip flexor.
O’Hearn, in his first season with the Pirates, had emerged as one of the club’s top hitters, batting .289 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs at the time of his injury.
He’d appeared in 44 games with the Pirates, posting an on-base percentage of .368, along with 34 strikeouts and 19 walks while serving as the club’s main cleanup hitter.
Defensively, O’Hearn had been playing primarily right field with some action at first base.
As for Mangum, he returns to action following his placement on the injured list May 8 (retroactive to May 6) for a left hamstring strain.
Mangum, 30, had been slashing .260/.333/.288 through 30 games, with no home runs and three RBIs.
Playing mainly in left field, Mangum had made starts at all three outfield positions before going down.
