Lucy Roig has had a legendary lacrosse career at Quaker Valley.

A four-year starter, the QV senior broke the all-time record for goals scored, finishing the regular season with 258 in her career.

Roig eclipsed the record with a seven-goal performance April 30 in a 16-4 win against Aquinas Academy. Katherine Blaugrund held the Quakers’ career mark with 252 goals.

Appropriately, it was senior day for the QV girls team.

“I am very honored that I had the opportunity to break the record,” Roig said, “and I’m so grateful for my teammates’ and coaches’ support.

“I am so proud of everyone and the work they have put in. Our improvement is very noticeable, and I’m excited for the playoffs.”

QV coach Kristin Hric marveled at Roig’s record-setting performance.

“This is so well-deserved,” the first-year coach said. “Lucy has been a force on the field since her freshman year. She is also an absolute fighter. If she sets her sights on something, she is going to achieve it.

“Lucy is such a hard worker and plays with all heart and grit. When she is not scoring goals, she is dominating the draw and forcing turnovers. Her determination and drive are what sets her apart.”

A 5-foot-2 center midfielder, Roig and her senior teammates, Meredith Fallgren (D), Alexa Westwood (M/A) and Mia Floro (A), led QV to a 14-2 record and a WPIAL Class 2A playoff berth this year. The Quakers won 13 of their first 14 decisions and finished 8-1 in Section 2-2A, good for second place.

The QV girls strung together a nine-game winning streak during one particularly impressive stretch and racked up the second-best overall scoring average in 2A, netting 16 goals per game. The Quakers also held seven opponents to four goals or less and posted an 18-0 shutout against Ambridge.

“I am extremely proud of the entire team this season,” Hric said. “They set goals for themselves and have been putting in work to achieve them since Day 1. We have a great group of girls who support and push each other to be better each day.

“Our team is truly a collective of each player on the field. Each player brings her own set of strengths to help us win.”

Roig, who was a starter on the QV girls basketball team and plans study medicine in college with the goal of becoming a doctor, scored 21 goals in four district playoff games a year ago and tied her single-game career-high goal total with eight against Blackhawk.

She netted 60 goals this season and was complemented by a group of outstanding athletes.

“In addition to Lucy, Kate Miller and Alexa Westwood have been monsters in the attack, scoring goals and dishing out assists,” Hric said. “Meredith Fallgren and (junior) Annabel Miko anchor our defense with their hustle and aggressive play style.

“Newcomers Grace Keisel, Liz York, Tess Krotine and goalie Harper Sheridan have been phenomenal.”

Roig, Miller, Westwood, Fallgren, senior attacker Mia Floro, junior attacker Anna Campbell and sophomore defender Molly Millet all were starters a year ago.

Fallgren is committed to play lacrosse at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., as a student in the Honors and President’s Leadership programs.

“We have a talented group of girls on the team,” Fallgren said.

“We have a cohesive team that works well together. Every girl has been working very hard.”

Westwood plans to continue her career at Grove City College, where she will major in elementary and special education.

“I have been fortunate to play with some very skilled and hard-working players during my time at Quaker Valley,” Westwood said, “such as Meredith Fallgren, Lucy Roig and Kate Miller, along with others who make an impact every time they step on the field.”

The Quakers lost three of their four starting defenders from last season — Ruby Krotine, Nora Hammond and Lily Pulkowski — plus goalkeeper Emily Reiner.

“We’ve rebuilt the unit around Meredith Fallgren, Molly Millet, Charlotte Chapell and Mary Molchen, among others,” Hric said, “and we have high confidence in that group.”

The top four boys 3A teams and the top six teams in boys 2A, girls 3A and girls 2A in each section qualified for the district postseason.
