The Norwin baseball team was awarded the No. 4 seed in the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs.

The Knights (12-8) finished tied for first place in Section 2 with Canon-McMillan, but since Canon-McMillan swept the Knights in their three-game series, the section title went to the Big Macs.

Norwin drew No. 5 Central Catholic in the quarterfinals of the eight-team tournament scheduled to start May 18. The winner was to play either No. 8 Mt. Lebanon or No. 1 Butler in the semifinals May 20.

Norwin already has a win over Central Catholic, beating the Vikings, 6-1, in the second game of the season. Norwin made the WPIAL final last year and was the district runner-up.

The Knights played Hempfield in the semifinals. If those local teams meet again in the postseason, it will have to be in the championship.

Lacrosse playoffs

The Norwin girls lacrosse team was awarded the No. 9 seed and lost 10-5 to No. 8 Shaler in the first round of the WPIAL 3A playoffs.

The Knights (8-6-1) finished fifth in Section 1 behind Mt. Lebanon, Penn-Trafford, Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park. They were averaging 11.6 goals per game going into the postseason.

Serving it up

Norwin’s boys volleyball team was seeded No. 9 when the WPIAL revealed Class 3A playoff brackets. The Knights (10-8) lost in five games in the first round in a road match at No. 8 Peters Township (12-7).
