GLENSHAW PUBLIC LIBRARY
Glenshaw Public Library, 1504 Butler Plank Road, Shaler, was established in 1895 and is known as the oldest free library west of the Alleghenies.

Hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays for a quilters meet-up, 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, as well as 5 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays for a meet-up of embroiderers working on America’s Tapestry.
Various preplanned private classes and events are offered as scheduled, including:
• Roots: Adult Storytelling: 7-8 p.m. May 28. The library hosts a recurring “Roots: Storytelling” event, typically every other month, on the last Thursday. This evening for adults begins at 7 p.m.

MILLVALE COMMUNITY LIBRARY
Millvale Community Library, 213 Grant Ave., is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The library will be closed on Friday, May 23, for Memorial Day weekend and Friday, June 19, for Juneteenth.
Regular operating hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
The Tool Lending Library is open from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Upcoming events:
• Millvale’s Last Day of School Party at the Library: 3 to 6 p.m. May 29. All school-aged youth welcome to this free event that will include food, games, music, fun and early summer reading sign-ups.
• Death Cafe: 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 28 and June 25. A “Death Cafe” is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session. At a Death Cafe, people drink tea, eat cake, and discuss death, with the aim of increasing awareness of death to help people make the most of their lives. Registration is required and opens three weeks before each event.
• Video game drop in: 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. The free program is for school-aged youth ages 10-18. Snacks provided.
• Millvale Bike Rally: 12 to 3 p.m. June 6. Event includes bike classes, and free repairs and safety gear.
• All Bodies Welcome Yoga: 5:45 p.m. Thursdays in May, June, July and August on the back deck, weather permitting. Free.
• Youth Chess Club: 4:30 p.m. every Friday. No experience necessary. For youth 18 and under, free with snacks available.

Upcoming programs for everyone:
• Kids’ Book Sale: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6 and 7. Large selection of children’s books, puzzles and games at bargain prices. Cash, check or charge accepted. Friends of the library will enjoy a special members-only sale time from 8:30-10 a.m. June 6, plus Dancing and Donuts for members’ kids.
• Fold and Fly Paper Airplane Fun: 6 to 8 p.m. June 20 at Tim Rogers Field, 1522 Butler Plank Road. Make between one and 20 paper airplanes and see how far they can travel. Build them at home and/or visit the library for tips and practice from 6 to 7:45 p.m. May 21.
• Summer reading fun for all ages: “Unearth a Story”: Starts June 1. “Dig Into a Good Book” this summer, uncover hidden histories, and go digging for information from archaeology to paleontology and beyond. Read or listen to what you like, enter for prizes and have fun all summer long through Aug. 16.
• Experience Adventure at Local Museums and Historic Sites: Starts June 1. Experience Kits are a way to explore seven historic sites and museums in the area. Sites this year include Heinz History Center with Fort Pitt Museum and Meadowcroft Rockshelter; Beaver Area Heritage Museum including Fort McIntosh & Log House (Beaver, Pa.); Bradford House & Whiskey Rebellion Center (Washington, Pa.); Gibson House Manor (Jamestown, Pa.); Historic Ft. Steuben (Steubenville, Ohio); Lincoln Highway Experience (Latrobe, Pa.); McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center (McKeesport, Pa). Kits include a free admission pass for four persons. Contact Adult Services to reserve a kit (scheduled for one week). Enter a raffle just for visiting a site.
Programs for adults:
• Get the Lead Out: Safe Water Drinking Information: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 22. Representatives of GLO, who are working with the Hampton Shaler Water Authority, will be on site to answer questions related to drinking water, service lines, and more. Look for their table downstairs near the library staircase. Free kids’ activities. No registration.
• Canine Emergency! What to Do? 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 3. Kim Riester, an animal rescuer/trainer and former special prosecutor for animal cruelty, will provide a free presentation of techniques on how to simply approach distressed animals, safely assess/triage their symptoms, and initially treat conditions. The talk includes demonstrations on replica dogs, first aid kits, stretchers, muzzles, and other tools. The program is primarily focused on dogs though may be helpful for cats, rabbits and other animals.
• Let’s Podcast & Craft: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 5. Building community over a cup of tea as we celebrate the life of musician Prince. Bring along crafty projects to work on while we chat, and a friend or two as well. No registration.
• Wedding Design Challenge: Taylor’s Version: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 13. This playful competition invites you to imagine, design, and “plan” a highly fictional celebrity wedding inspired by Taylor Swift’s music, eras, and storytelling. Adults 21 can form teams of up to four persons. Cake tasting included. BYOB. $10 for supplies. Please register.
• Caring for Caregivers: 1:30 to 3 p.m. third Wednesdays of the month. This program offers gentle support, advice, and sharing in this safe space with others who are also experiencing the joys and struggles of caregiving. Led by Erin McMaster, a memory care advisor from ProMedica Memory Care. Registration is helpful but not required. Walk-ins are welcome.
For children and tweens:
•Adopt a Grandparent Storytime at Ridgecrest of McCandless (McCandless Crossings, 8870 Duncan Ave.): 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. May 28. Join Miss Ing and Miss Joyce for songs, rhymes, and stories, as well as the opportunity to meet new friends at this unique inter-generational exchange; maybe you can “adopt” a grandparent of your own. No registration.
•Tail Waggin’ Tutors (Therapy Dogs): 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 30. Read to your favorite therapy dog on the last Saturday of the month. Kids in kindergarten and up can sign up for a 15-minute session. So that more readers can have an opportunity to read, registration is required, and a child may register for up to two sessions. You can sign up for more if slots are still open on program day. Research shows that reading to dogs enhances childhood literacy.
•Adopt a Grandparent Storytime at Arden Courts (1125 Perry Highway): 10:15 a.m. June 5. Join Miss Ing and Miss Joyce for songs, rhymes, and stories and the opportunity to meet new friends who at for this unique inter-generational exchange; maybe you can “adopt” a grandparent of your own. No registration.
•Happy Little Canvases: 1 to 2 p.m. June 6 for those entering grades K-3 in the fall and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for those entering grades 4-6. Join Miss Libby for painting sessions with fun themes. Bring an old T-shirt and your imagination. Register for your preferred session.
•Stories, Music, and More in Your Neighborhood: Starts week of June 8 through week of July 26. A free book each week. Check the library’s social media for any weather-related changes to outdoor events:

•Make a Fairy Garden with the Shaler Garden Club: 6 to 8 p.m. June 12. For young children and their families. Following a story about fairy houses, children are invited to build their own fairy houses on the library grounds using natural materials that have been gathered by the club members. Please register.
