Fans longing for Heinz ketchup the old-fashioned way are in luck because the Heinz glass ketchup bottle will return to store shelves nationwide.
Beginning Wednesday, Heinz ketchup in glass bottles will be sold exclusively at Walmart stores while supplies last.
While Heinz ketchup is still produced in glass bottles for the restaurant industry, the bottles haven’t been widely available for retail purchase in nearly a decade.
Their “nostalgic return” is part of a new ad campaign celebrating Heinz ketchup’s 157th anniversary, including its classic “57” branding and fan rituals, according to a company news release.
During April’s NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, Kraft Heinz awarded Iowa center Logan Jones, the 57th athlete selected, a lifetime supply of Heinz ketchup, also paying tribute to the “57” branding.
The new ad campaign will feature the glass bottles’ “slow pour effect” — originally highlighted in a 1970s Heinz ad campaign — and the bottles’ “smack,” which became a pop-culture phenomenon after appearing on “Seinfeld.”
Heinz used glass bottles for its ketchup until the 1990s, replacing them with squeezable plastic bottles introduced in 1983.
The glass bottles were historically manufactured in the Pittsburgh region.
