Duquesne lost another part of its illustrious past in men’s basketball with the passing of Mayer L. “Mickey” Winograd, a three-year letterman for the Dukes during their nationally prominent teams of the 1950s.
A starter on the 1955 National Invitation Tournament championship team, Winograd died Thursday in Naples, Fla. He was 92.
As a junior, he was a key member of the ‘55 team that defeated No. 9 Dayton at Madison Square Garden to win the NIT and finish No. 6 in the AP poll with a 22-4 record.
He averaged 11.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and shot 44.2% while playing alongside the likes of All-Americans Sihugo Green and Dick Ricketts.
A 6-foot-2 forward and a member of the Duquesne University Athletics Hall of Fame, Winograd averaged 9.1 points and 4.1 rebounds during a three-year career on “The Bluff.”
Winograd, a Jersey City, N.J., native, played in 78 career games for Duquesne and was one of four Dukes to appear in all 26 games during the 1954-55 championship season.
They opened the ‘55 NIT with a 75-66 victory over Louisville before defeating Cincinnati, 65-51, to advance to the championship game.
Winograd was selected in the eighth round (48th overall) of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia Warriors but didn’t play in the league.
He served as captain of the U.S. Basketball Team at the 1957 Maccabiah Games in Israel, and in 1988, Winograd was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Western Pennsylvania.
He attended Fordham Law School and also served in the Navy as an assistant to the Naval Chaplain. Dedicating his career to public service, Winograd served as a trial attorney and later as Chief Public Defender in Hudson and Essex counties in New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mo Winograd. The family requests donations be made to the Mo Winograd Scholar Fund in Bonita Springs, Fla. Visit ncwa-fl.org, select “Scholarships.”
