Construction won’t delay the opening of Shaler’s community swimming pool, but the weather might.

The township announced Wednesday that the new bathhouse at Crawford Pool in Kiwanis Park is ready for Memorial Day weekend.

Township officials had been uncertain until then if the bathhouse would be ready in time for the traditional start of the season, or if the pool’s opening may have been delayed by a week.

For the pool to open, the bathhouse needs to be functioning, Township Manager Judy Kording said.

But after the week started with a two-day heat wave Monday and Tuesday, weather may instead be the issue.

The township announced that it is “monitoring the forecast as Saturday is looking a little chilly and rainy.”

National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Kienzle backed that up Wednesday night.

“It’s not looking the best,” he said. “For a pool opening, it might be a little rough.”

Wet weather is in the forecast for the entire three-day weekend, Kienzle said.

“Just about every single day is going to feature some kind of rain chances and some kind of thunder chances as well,” he said, adding that Saturday has the greatest chances for widespread showers and thunderstorms. “It might not be the greatest holiday weekend out there.”

The temperature will be around average Saturday, at 70, and warming up toward 80 on Sunday and Monday, he said.

Shaler said it will update the status of Crawford Pool’s opening Saturday morning.

The pool’s original bathhouse, dating from 1964, was torn down after the end of last year’s season to make way for the new facility.

A dedication for the bathhouse is scheduled for July 4.
