DIY History Days at West Overton Village will provide cost-free educational and hands-on learning experiences for children to explore history.

“Each day will feature a historical theme and related activity, such as a craft or the opportunity to handle real artifacts from the Museum collection,” wrote Pam Curtin, director of visitor engagement, in a news release.

DIY History Days will occur every other Sunday starting this weekend through October.

The first program, focused on photography, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the village’s museum in East Huntingdon.

“Children can explore how photographs were taken before the digital age, examine artifacts including vintage cameras, and discover the scientific processes that made photography possible,” Curtin wrote.

The June 7 program will involve coal mining and coke production. West Overton is the birthplace of Henry Frick, who founded a coke production company by 20. The village is opening a new exhibit focusing on Frick’s early years.

Children participating in DIY History Days do not need to sign up prior to attending. Families may drop in at any time.

In July, West Overton will be hosting a similarly themed two-day DIY History Weekend featuring activities, games and crafts for children.
