Hundreds of elementary school students got to make their dreams come true on Wednesday, packing the stage at the Benedum Center to sing and dance.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust received a grant from Disney for the Disney Musicals in Schools program. Nine elementary schools in Allegheny, Washington and Greene counties participated in this year’s program. Wednesday’s Student Share Celebration spotlighted the young performers with numbers from each school’s musical.

“Disney Musicals in Schools is a three-year program that creates sustainable musical theater programs in public elementary schools,” said Tracy Edmunds, vice president of arts education at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, during introductory remarks at Wednesday’s event. “This residency program provides a unique opportunity to bring the collaborative art of musical theater into schools while strengthening arts education and building meaningful connections across the school community.”

This year’s schools — which included four that participated for the first time — include Allison Park Elementary School; Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School; Pittsburgh Sunnyside K-8; Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf; Environmental Charter School Intermediate; Clairton Elementary School; Twin Rivers Elementary School; Penn Hills Elementary School; and Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School.

“During the 17-week free program, we pair educators with professional teaching artists who provide hands-on guidance, training and tools throughout the rehearsal process to help teachers build skills and confidence needed to independently produce musicals for years to come,” Edmunds said.

On Wednesday, the students performed individual numbers from their Disney musicals, including “Finding Nemo KIDS,” “The Lion King KIDS” and “Aladdin KIDS.” From “Hakuna Matata” to “Let It Go,” hundreds of students sang and danced their way across the stage.

Parents and families were invited to attend the Share Celebration at the Benedum Center, and they all made their voices heard from the audience, cheering for the up-and-coming stars.

“The experience has been great. She’s really excited. It’s a great experience for the kids, all of them,” said Gia Yarussi, whose daughter, fourth grader Kaliyah, performed with Penn Hills Elementary School when they brought “One Jump Ahead” from “Aladdin KIDS” to the Benedum Stage.

Her daughter is a dancer, and Yarussi said that all of the students worked really hard in rehearsals.

“They put on the show at the beginning of May, they did four shows. It was really good,” she said.

Heather Mizgorski’s granddaughter Naomi also attends Penn Hills Elementary School, currently in the third grade.

“This is like a dream come true, I think, for some of these kids,” Mizgorski said. “She would practice every day, practice the whole dance, whole songs, every night.”

Jaquay James was there to see her little sister, fifth grader Jhace, perform a song from “Frozen KIDS” with Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School.

“It was lovely,” she said. “She’s been so excited, she’s been talking about it for a month.”

As the culmination of this program, students from all of the schools came together at the beginning of the Share Celebration to write a song written and composed by Alan Menken — fittingly titled “It Starts with a Dream.”
