Born just over a decade ago, Täkō — a Mexican and Japanese fusion restaurant located on Sixth Street in Downtown Pittsburgh — just announced its temporary closure, effective June 28.

It’s closing for a “full revamp” and renovation of the street food-driven restaurant. Inside, there is a street kitchen window and bar seating area that followers are hoping won’t go away, a full bar, open kitchen and a large dining room fitted with green leather backing on the booths and large rose-pink chandeliers draping overhead.

Richard DeShantz, chef and owner of Richard DeShantz Restaurant Group, and Tolga Sevdik, co-owner and chief operating officer, had a vision when they created the restaurant. The fusion-style food, paired with dim lighting and the elevated DJ cage, made that dream tangible.

“We’re really having fun and playing with technique here,” DeShantz said when the restaurant first opened in 2015.

In its 11 years of operation, Täkō has been a staple in Downtown Pittsburgh for visitors and residents to dine. DeShantz and his team have, since then, built more than nine restaurants across Downtown, the Strip District and Bakery Square.

“The temporary closure marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter,” the restaurant’s statement read, “to elevate the guest experience, refresh the space, refine the menu, and bring renewed energy to one of Pittsburgh’s most recognized dining destinations.”

A similar temporary closure of another of DeShantz’s restaurants — Butcher and Rye — was announced in 2020 following the pandemic. After reopening as Apres Ski Bar — a lodge-inspired bar that kept visitors warm even on the most frigid winter nights — in 2022, frequenters were left wondering if Butcher and Rye would ever come back.

Now, they’re beginning to wonder the same about Täkō.

“Hopefully not another butcher and the rye situation. Forever temporarily closed,” was a comment on Täkō’s Instagram post announcing the pause.

The time away from Täkō is described as being one to reimagine the restaurant’s “concept,” on enhancing every aspect of the guest experience while staying true to the spirit that made Täkō a staple in the city.

Guests are encouraged to follow along on social media for updates, behind-the-scenes progress, and future reopening announcements.
