A Ligonier Township man is behind bars after police said he pointed a gun at another driver during a road rage incident on Route 30.

Ligonier Valley Police charged Michael A. Payne, 62, this week with attempted aggravated assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and simple assault.

The driver of a Volkswagen Jetta told investigators he was headed west on Route 30 in Ligonier Township at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when he approached a Chevrolet Silverado driving slowly on the highway, and attempted to pass it. The Chevy driver cut him off, stopped on the road, got out, pointed a gun and yelled “come find out,” according to court papers.

The Volkswagen driver got a picture of the pickup which helped authorities identify the owner as Payne, according to court papers.

When police went to his home, the Chevy pickup was parked outside and Payne matched the description of the suspect. A gun was recovered from the truck through a search warrant, police said.

Payne did not have an attorney listed in online court records. He was being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $50,000 bail. A May 29 preliminary hearing is set.
