Work is underway to take down the first of 26 deteriorated or dangerous buildings in Harrison.

Middlefield Demolition is razing homes in the Natrona neighborhood, with the first ones coming down along Pine and Walnut streets.

Commissioners last month approved the contract of just under $123,000 for seven buildings to be demolished during the first round of work.

Crews took down a house at 77 Pine St. before moving on to 5 and 12 Walnut St. Others on the list include 31 Garfield St., 2 Chestnut St., 21 River Ave. and 24-26 Kuntz St.

Work will continue through June 1.

Township Manager Amy Rockwell said the work will be paid mostly with a $100,000 grant from Allegheny County gambling funds. The balance will be paid by the township.

Two rounds of demolition will follow. There will be six buildings taken down in the second phase and the remaining 13 in the third phase.

That work will be paid partially with a separate $100,000 county grant, along with funding from the blight recovery program sponsored by the Allegheny Valley North Council of Governments. The township will foot the balance.
