Sean Cartwright was not a happy camper after his first race at the WPIAL Class 3A Track and Field Championships.

Second place in the 110-meter hurdles was not what he planned.

His attitude changed about an hour later when the Franklin Regional junior stood atop of the podium after winning the high jump by clearing a personal best 6 foot, 9 inches.

He was not finished. He picked up a second gold medal for winning the 300-meter hurdles.

“I thought I would win the 110s and place in the high jump and 300s,” Cartwright said. “That was my plan. But after placing second in the 110s, it motivated me to work harder.

“It turned out to be a great day. I cannot put into words or be disappointed.”

Cartwright’s teammate, senior Anthony Petrucci, placed fourth in the discus to qualify for the PIAA Track and Field Championships on May 22-23 at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Franklin Regional Jamie Kociela placed second in the high jump.

Both were looking to get on the podium again and return home with medals.

“I am looking forward to the state tournament,” Cartwright said. “I get to compete against some of the best in the state.

“Winning at WPIALs shows me my hard work is paying off. It also boosted my confidence.”

Kociela was seeded No. 1 in the WPIAL with a jump of 5-8. She cleared 5-5 at the WPIAL meet in difficult conditions.

The WPIAL athletes were confronted with unusually cool weather. Temperatures only reached the low 50s and the conditions were damp.

The athletes headed to Shippensburg for the state meet were possibly expecting even worse conditions — temperatures in the 50s with rain.

Cartwright’s twin brother Ethan just missed qualifying for states on the 300-meter hurdles. He placed fifth (the top four automatically qualified) but did not meet the qualifying time.

Sprinter Loch Bresnahan earned medals in the 100- and 200-meter dash for placing eighth in both races.

The three qualifiers are trying to conclude another good season on the track for Franklin Regional.

The Panthers boys and girls just missed reaching the WPIAL team finals losing out to Hempfield.

The boys lost 76-74.

“Hempfield had more depth,” Franklin Regional coach Bob Ralston. “It was still a great season.”
