Caroline Grimsley wasn’t ready to be done putting on her Fox Chapel lacrosse uniform.

Grimsley will attend the University of Tampa next year and won’t be playing lacrosse in college. The Foxes senior, who has 264 points including 142 goals in her career, helped the Foxes reach the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals with a chance to play for a spot in states.

Fox Chapel earned a bye at the No. 4 seed before beating Penn-Trafford to reach the semifinals. The Foxes were then knocked off by top-seeded Mt. Lebanon, 18-6.

Part of what made the Foxes difficult to play against was their high-pressure defensive style.

“It helped our attack out to press their defenders,” Grimsley said. “That allowed us to take pressure off of the defenders and middies. Our press was a huge help this season.”

Fox Chapel played Upper St. Clair for a spot in the PIAA playoffs May 21, the results of which were too late for this edition.

“It is exciting to have a chance to go to states. We were hyped about it,” Grimsley said.

The Foxes were sharp in their playoff game against Penn-Trafford. Fox Chapel was led in scoring by Caroline Leland, who contributed five goals.

Grimsley had two goals and seven assists.

Brooke Leone and Alice McLeland also scored twice.

“We all contributed well on the attack and moved well,” Grimsley said. “We found the open cutter and were in the groove.”

The Fox Chapel boys lacrosse team, meanwhile, couldn’t quite escape from section rival Shady Side Academy. The Foxes and Bulldogs met in the WPIAL semifinals, with the Bulldogs picking up a 7-5 victory to move onto the championship game.

Despite the Foxes’ loss to the eventual district champions, Fox Chapel coach Jordon Hodder was happy his team had something else to play for. With a win over top-seeded Mt. Lebanon, which was upset in the semifinals by Pine-Richland, the Foxes could reach the PIAA playoffs for the first time.

“It continues to be a special year,” Hodder said. “I’m extremely proud of what this team has done. They have earned every opportunity they’ve gotten.”

During the regular season, the Foxes beat Shady Side Academy in overtime. The Bulldogs were able to make life difficult on Fox Chapel’s offense in the offseason.

Hodder said he wasn’t worried about how the Foxes would handle the pressure in the postseason.

“Our whole season, our boys haven’t been afraid of a challenge,” Hodder said. “We’ve been comfortable in the uncomfortable moments. It hasn’t always gone our way, but we have belonged in every game.”
