Laurel senior Alexis Geiwitz overcame sloppy conditions to win the PIAA Class 2A shot put Saturday at Shippensburg.
Geiwitz’s winning toss of 41 feet, 6 ¼ inches came on her first throw.
Heavy rains overnight and into Saturday morning made for sloppy conditions.
Geiwitz overcame a disappointing performance in the discus on Friday where she played eighth.
“You have to have the right mindset with the conditions,” Geiwitz said. “You must keep the shot dry. It was muddy.”
Geiwitz’s throws were consistent, but not a record.
“I was definitely disappointed I did not throw better on Friday,” Geiwitz said. “But I bounced back and I am happy to be taking home two medals because I had never done that before.”
