Pitt entered Memorial Day wondering how a strong performance at the ACC Tournament might boost its stock in the eyes of the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee.
Despite winning three games at the annual league tournament, it wasn’t enough to propel Pitt (33-24, 11-19 ACC) into the NCAA Tournament, as the Panthers were left out of the 64-team field in Monday’s reveal.
The Panthers sought their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 1995.
Instead, Pitt’s best season since 2013, featuring the most wins as an ACC member, comes to an end.

As the No. 14 team in the ACC Tournament, Pitt dispatched No. 11 Louisville in the first round, No. 6 Wake Forest in the second round and No. 3 seed/11th-ranked Florida State in the quarterfinals.
Those victories set up a semifinals showdown May 23 against North Carolina, the No. 2 team in the country, with the Tar Heels prevailing 13-5 before ultimately losing to Georgia Tech in the ACC title game.
In the end, the selection committee was not swayed by Pitt’s most recent play, the Panthers having placed 14th in the ACC during the regular season and finishing with a losing record in league play.
But following the ACC Tournament, Pitt had accrued a No. 38 national RPI, 10 Quadrant 1 victories and 14 combined Quadrant 1 and Quadrant 2 wins.
Notable victories over the course of the season included a three-game series sweep of No. 10 Virginia at home from April 24-26, as well as a 23-1 beatdown of No. 12 West Virginia on April 21.
Dispatching Wake Forest (No. 20 RPI) and Florida State (No. 7) at the ACC Tournament gave the Panthers two more solid late-season wins for their resume.
On the other hand, Pitt was swept by Cal in league play, lost a mid-week matchup with Kent State and had defeats earlier in the year to Santa Clara.
Offensively, it was a historic season for Pitt, which ranked 11th nationally in scoring per game (8.6 runs), sixth in on-base percentage (.435), ninth in homers (109) and slugging percentage (.539) as well as first in walks (397).
Outfielder Lorenzo Carrier enjoyed a dominant individual campaign, batting .387 with 20 home runs, 69 RBIs and a 1.318 OPS.
Infielder Caden Dulin batted .349 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs, while Kai Wagner, the hero in Pitt’s ACC Tournament upset over Florida State, Trey Fenderson, AJ Nessler, Carter Dierdorf and Sebastian Pisacreta helped Pitt’s offense be among the most potent in the nation.
Carrier was named first-team All-ACC for his efforts, while Dulin was a second-team all-league selection.
