The consumer alert at Prantl’s Bakery in Shadyside was removed on Friday after the bakery passed reinspection by the Allegheny County Health Department. The bakery on Walnut Street was successfully reassessed on May 22 after being cited for several high-risk violations in a May 14 inspection report.

Joe Cugliari, owner and president of Prantl’s Bakery, made a statement on the bakery’s Facebook page on Saturday after the alert was lifted, describing the experience as “profoundly humbling” and “reinforcing our commitment to not only meet but exceed industry standards.”

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our community and valued customers for their unwavering support during this challenging period,” a Facebook post signed by Cugliari read, alluding to an outpouring of customer support. “The positive feedback on social media has been remarkable, and the increase in patronage truly reflects the strong support we enjoy within our community.”

Cugliari also thanked Prantl’s employees. TribLive could not immediately reach Cugliari for comment on Tuesday.

To pass reinspection, the health department mandated that the entire Prantl’s facility be cleaned and disinfected and old food debris, rodent droppings and all accumulated non-essential items (which can harbor pests) be removed.

While the health department does not release follow-up reports, restaurants issued a consumer alert placard are reassessed within 10 days. Placards are removed if violations are corrected and a new green inspection placard is posted.

Cugliari also took to social media on May 18 after the consumer alert was first issued.

“We take food safety and cleanliness extremely seriously and appreciate the opportunity to address this matter,” he said.
