Eden Christian captured its first WPIAL Class A title thanks to left-hander Noah Emswiler.

Even though the senior gave up an early run, the Lipscomb University commit shut down Greensburg Central Catholic’s offense over the final six innngs.

He allowed four hits and struck out 15 to lead No. 1 Eden Christian Academy to a 5-1 victory against No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic on Tuesday at EQT Park in Washington.

“It is finally nice to get a gold medal,” Emswiler said. “We got three silver medals the past three years. We have been playing like a family all season.”

Emswiler struck out the side in the fifth and sixth innings. His fastball was reaching the upper 80s and mixed in a mean breaking ball.

“I am happy for the players, coaches and school,” Eden Christian Academy coach Mark Feldman said. “It was fun to watch. Look at what Noah did today. He was unbelievable.

“I am so proud of him. He works hard to be good. He competed the entire game.”

The Warriors (16-4) broke the game open against GCC ace Tyler Samide with four runs in the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie.

Brody Hull, a Slippery Rock recruit, delivered a two-run hit to give Eden Christian Academy a 3-1 lead.

“That is what Brody does, comes up with the big hits,” Feldman said. “We were able to work the count on their pitcher.”

Andrew Sharpless added an RBI single and Levi DeFazio followed with an RBI double.

Samide (7-1) allowed eights and struck out six. He struggled with his control, walking four and hitting a batter.

Greensburg Central Catholic (17-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Stephen Kochis singled and scored on a double by Anthony Grippo, who had two hits.

“It was exciting to jump on their pitcher early,” GCC coach John Boyle said. “It gave our players confidence against him. We were up for the challenge.

“Tyler got a little frustrated because he felt he was getting squeezed a little bit. There were some pitches that looked like perfect strikes.”

Boyle said he was pleased how Samide pitched over the final two innings.

Eden Christian Academy tied the score in the third inning when Sharpless was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

“That was a freshman getting hit with the pitch,” Feldman said.

Eden Christian is the returning PIAA runner-up. It will face District 9 champion Elk County Catholic on June 1.

Greensburg Central Catholic faces the winner of the Homer-Center/Claysburg-Kimmel game, which is being played Wednesday at Mount Aloysius College.
