USDA declares crop disaster for 17 Pa. counties after April freeze
The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared a disaster for 17 counties in Pennsylvania after a late-season freeze resulted in damage and losses to crops.
The declaration will free up emergency loan assistance for agricultural producers who experienced the effects between April 19 to 21. The current declaration does not include Southwestern Pennsylvania, but the USDA is reviewing data from the remaining counties in Pennsylvania.
Producers in Southwestern Pennsylvania saw their fruit crops damaged during that time period, according to a report from TribLive last week. Perennial crops such as apples, pears, peaches, strawberries and cherries bloom when the weather starts to warm.
Those are the crops that growers told TribLive were affected by the unseasonal freeze, which will ultimately impact their income.
Counties covered by the current disaster declaration are: Adams, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming, and York.
