For the third straight playoff game, Ellwood City played the role of Cardiac Kids as they rallied to defeated South Park in the WPIAL Class 3A baseball championship game, 5-2, on Wednesday at EQT Park in Washington.
It is the sixth district title for the Wolverines and first since 2012.
Ellwood City turned to small ball with three straight bunts after the bases were loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The first bunt led to a throwing error by pitcher Cooper Hochendoner, who was once again dominant for South Park. The misfire at the plate led to two runs scoring, and Ellwood City kept the bunts and runs coming.
Pitt commit Aaron Lake had two hits and went the distance in picking up the victory.
South Park falls to 16-6 and will open the PIAA playoffs Monday against District 5 winner Bedford.
Ellwood City improves to 19-3 and will host the District 6 runners-up. The D-6 title game is Thursday between Philipsburg-Osceola and Tyrone.
